No. 2 N-F fends off No. 15 NU

FONDA, Iowa — The Class 1A No. 2-ranked Newell-Fonda Mustangs squeezed by the Class 2A No. 15 North Union Warriors, 3-1, during an Iowa clash of softball titans Thursday night.

Bailey Sievers went 3-for-3 with a double and scored two runs, while eighth-grade phenom Kiera Jungers fired a six-hit complete game to pace the Mustangs’ nonconference victory in Fonda, Iowa.

Bailey Sievers, who had generated 25 runs prior to Thursday’s first pitch, set the early tone by scoring one of the Mustangs’ two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

North Union produced its solo run in the top of the third inning to whittle the gap to 2-1. Sam Nielsen legged out a hit, wheeled to second base on Cassie Beadle’s bunt hit and circled the bases on Olivia Von Bank’s RBI single to left field.

Newell-Fonda answered with a solo run in the home half of the third when Bailey Sievers collected another hit and eventually scored.

Jungers and North Union freshman ace right-hander Emily Meyer dominated the final three and a half innings by keeping the respective opposing offenses off the scoreboard.

Meyer allowed three runs on nine hits in six innings of work to absorb the loss. She did not issue a walk or record a strikeout.

Jungers recorded eight strikeouts and issued only one base-on-balls in seven innings inside the chalked circle to earn the complete-game victory.

Nielsen went 2-for-3 to pace the Warriors’ offensive effort, while Meyer doubled and Hope Steinberger singled on the game.

Megan Morenz went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI for Newell-Fonda, Ella Larsen went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Maggie Walker contributed a run-scoring single.

North Union (10-4) travels to Manson, Iowa, tonight to face Manson-Northwest Webster in its regular-season finale.

Newell-Fonda (13-2) plays host to Gehlen Catholic at 5:30 p.m. tonight in Fonda, Iowa.
