Shoen powers Martins to win over Pirates

WINDOM — Derek Shoen and Luke Becker equally combined for half of Fairmont’s 16 hits, while Shoen struck out four batters during 1-2-3 relief innings in the eighth and ninth to engineer the Martins’ 10-3 amateur baseball victory over the Windom Pirates on Wednesday night in Windom.

Shoen went 4-for-5 with a double and a triple en route to a game-best five RBIs and one run scored, while Luke Becker went 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

Jack Waletich contributed two hits and two runs scored to the Martins’ offensive effort, Blake Crawmer went 2-for-4 with a run scored, Spencer Chirpich doubled and tallied a run, while Levi Becker went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a run scored.

Lance Becker supplied an RBI single, while Christian Petschke added a hit.

Fairmont right-hander Matt Lytle started on the mound, allowing one unearned run on one hit in four innings of work.

Ethan Hurn gave up two runs — both earned — on three hits in three innings of relief for Fairmont. Hurn struck out four and walked three.

Shoen faced only six Pirate batters in pitching the final two frames. The hard-throwing right-hander posted four strikeouts without issuing a base-on-balls.

The Martins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before doubling their gap with two more in the fourth.

Waletich and Luke Becker generated singles in Fairmont’s initial at-bat before Waletich crossed the plate on Shoen’s RBI single. Luke Becker later tagged and sprinted home on Levi Becker’s sacrifice fly.

Shoen then set the offensive table for Fairmont in the fourth by singling before Levi Becker singled and Chirpich walked. Shoen scored on an errant pickoff throw before Levi Becker crossed the plate on the back of a double steal with Chirpich.

Crawmer and Luke Becker each singled in the Martins’ seventh before Shoen hammered a two-run triple down the left-field line for a 6-3 lead.

Fairmont put the game out of reach with four more runs in the top of the eighth. Chirpich blooped a double before pinch runner Carter Bell scored on Lance Becker’s RBI single. Crawmer legged out a bunt hit before pinch runner Jack Hested eventually scored on a passed ball. Hurn walked, Luke Becker collected an infield hit and two runs scored on Shoen’s double.

Fairmont (9-2) plays host to Lakefield at 2 p.m. Sunday in Northrop.
