Martins halve split doubleheader

BANCROFT, Iowa — Fairmont ace hurler Matt Lytle and third baseman Derek Shoen delivered clutch performances in the Martins’ second game of Saturday’s split amateur baseball doubleheader to help salvage a split decision at Bancroft Memorial Park.

Reeling after three consecutive walks and a three-run error with two outs in the top of the seventh inning allowed the New Ulm Brewers to rally for a 5-3 Game 1 win over Fairmont, Lytle gave the Martins a shot of adrenaline against the Bancroft Those Guys in the last of three seven-inning contests at Vince Meyer Field on Saturday. Bancroft defeated New Ulm in the middle game.

“I knew I had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning, but none of my teammates said anything to jinx it,” said a grinning Lytle, whose complete-game no-hit shutout propelled Fairmont to a 2-0 triumph over Bancroft in the final south-of-the-border battle. “It wasn’t pretty with me walking five, but I received outstanding defensive support today.

“Shoen delivered a couple of diving stops and our outfielders caught everything hit their way. I’m just glad to get outside and play.”

After hard-throwing Bancroft starting pitcher Tyler Jacobson exited the mound after striking out six in three shutout innings, Shoen and teammate Tyler Tennyson greeted Those Guys’ reliever Alex Amaral with back-to-back singles to set the table in the top of the fourth frame.

Amaral notched a strikeout with Martins’ runners at the corners and no outs, but the fleet-footed Shoen tagged and scored the first of his two runs in Game 2 on Levi Becker’s RBI sacrifice fly to right field to stake Fairmont to a 1-0 lead.

Shoen then displayed his leather at third base during the bottom of the fourth to keep Bancroft at bay. After Lytle issued back-to-back leadoff walks to Brendan Dougherty and Will Sturek, Shoen gloved a hard grounder off Arthur Sells’ bat to erase Sturek at second base.

Lytle then recorded the most pivotal of his four strikeouts before gloving a hard-hit comebacker by Carter Troncon to thwart Those Guys’ fourth-inning threat.

Lytle walked two more Bancroft batters around a strikeout to open the bottom of the fifth before Shoen and second baseman Luke Becker snared back-to-back sinking liners off the bats of Brad Goulet and Dougherty, respectively, to turn away the home team empty-handed again.

Shoen produced the Martins’ key insurance run during the top of the sixth in exchange for a contusion after getting plunked by Bancroft reliever Thomas Bruss. Shoen moved to second base when Tennyson’s grounder was misplayed before eventually scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Ethan Hurn for a 2-0 lead.

After the Martins committed their only miscue of the game to open the bottom of the sixth, Lytle retired six consecutive Bancroft hitters to seal his no-hitter.

Levi Becker and Spencer Chirpich produced Fairmont’s other hits against Bancroft.

Hurn hurled five solid innings for Fairmont in Game 1, allowing two runs — only one earned — on four hits en route to a 3-2 lead before giving way to Paxton Gravlin in the top of the sixth against New Ulm.

After striking out the Brewers in order during a perfect sixth inning of relief, Gravlin issued walks to three of New Ulm’s first four hitters in the seventh.

Fairmont ace closer Jon Traetow notched a key strikeout before Judd Davis connected on a sinking fly ball to center that was dropped. Unfortunately for the Martins, the three Brewer runners were in motion early due to the full-count and two-out situation with Davis at the plate and all scored to take a 5-3 lead.

New Ulm closer Wade French allowed a two-out single to Luke Becker — his third of Game 1 — during Fairmont’s last at-bat in the seventh, but French got an ensuing groundout to cap the victory.

French, who produced an RBI single in the Brewers’ fifth, recorded two strikeouts without issuing a walk in two shutout innings of relief.

Luke Becker and Shoen drilled back-to-back doubles, respectively, to stake the Martins to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning in Game 1.

Shoen, who went 3-for-4 in the opener, produced his second RBI of the game with a single in the third. Chirpich, who had singled, scored on Shoen’s single. Luke Becker, who went 3-for-3, also singled during the Martins’ at-bat.

Traetow then drew a leadoff walk and circled the bases on Levi Becker’s towering RBI double to straightaway center to extend Fairmont’s lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Fairmont Martins (2-1) play St. Clair at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Bancroft Memorial Park.
