Becker defends girls pentathlon; Heinze, Baarts tie for boys title

FAIRMONT — Joni Becker defended her Fairmont girls pentathlon crown, while Josh Heinze and Caden Baarts shared top boys honors during Friday’s intrasquad track & field event on the Fairmont High School campus.

Becker utilized her combination of speed and power to generate a first-place total of 3,650 points to fend off long-distance extraordinaire Laura Thompson’s runner-up score of 3,500 and hurdling phenom McKayla Chambers’ third-place mark of 3,300.

In the boys’ competition, Heinze and Baarts displayed their athleticism in netting a tie for first place by producing 3,450 points apiece, while speedster Hudson Artz collected third place by finishing only 50 points off the pace.

Baarts highlighted his first-place point production by fending off both Heinze and Prince Lebbi in the 40-yard dash at the wire, with all three delivering a time of 4.9 seconds.

Baarts also shared top honors with Amos Broomfield in the 40-yard hurdles by posting identical 5.8s.

Baarts tied David Maakestad, Trey Tumbleson and Kyler Wolters for second place in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches behind Heinze’s gold-medal effort of 5-6.

Baarts also placed third in the shot put — 32-10 — behind champion Noah Rahm (36-7) and runner-up Sawyer Tordsen (34-6).

Heinze added a fifth-place time of 5.9 in the 40-yard hurdles, while Baarts took fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:27.

Artz fended off Kaleb Hoye for first place in the open 800 — 2:19-2:21 — to complement third place in the 40-yard hurdles (5.9) and a fourth-place tie with Hoye and James Johnson in the 40-yard dash (5.1s).

Heinze also placed first in the two non-scored events, besting Baarts in the standing triple jump — 30-6 to 27-0, while soaring by standing long jump runner-up Kyler Wolters, 10-2 to 9-2.

In the girls’ competition, Becker edged Chambers at the wire to win the 40-yard dash with 5.7s, while Becker netted second place in the 800-meter run behind Thompson’s winning ways, 2:36-2:40.

Chambers garnered both the high jump and 40-yard hurdles crowns to pace her third-place overall score. Chambers bested Hadley Artz in the hurdles, 6.4-6.7, while clearing 4-6 in the high jump to fend off Thompson’s second-place mark of 4-4.

Natalie Tonne heaved the shot to a winning distance of 35-2 to fend off Mackenzie Householder’s 29-4 and Chambers’ 26-9.

Emily Frank swept the non-scored standing long jump and standing triple jump. Frank’s leap of 7-10 bettered runner-up Brooklyn Meyer by 2 inches, while Frank’s triple was 8 inches longer than Ellie Hernes’ second-place 22-2.

Fairmont’s first outdoor competition on the heels of the Minnesota State High School League’s scheduled 3-week moratorium due to Covid-19 is Tuesday, April 7, in a quadrangular against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Minnesota Valley Lutheran and the host Eagles in New Ulm.
