Cardinals, Bucs hoopsters hit road for playoffs

FAIRMONT — Both the Fairmont Cardinals and Blue Earth Area Bucs boys basketball teams will hit the road for postseason tournament action on Thursday night.

No. 2-seeded Fairmont plays No. 3-seeded Luverne in a 7:30 p.m. Section 3AA, South Sub-Section semifinal game in Windom.

No. 1-seeded Jackson County Central squares off against No. 5-seeded Pipestone Area in the other Section 3AA, South Sub-Section semifinal at 6 p.m. in Windom.

No. 2-seeded Blue Earth Area battles No. 3-seeded Maple River in a Section 2AA, South Sub-Section semifinal at 7:45 p.m. at Mankato East High School.

7th-grade basketball 1-2 at tournament

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Red seventh-grade girls basketball team compiled a 1-2 record during weekend action at the Austin tournament.

Host Austin downed Fairmont in first-round action, 30-23.

Ellie Ortega collected nine points and nine rebounds to top Red, Brylee Miller netted seven points and Meredith Nemmers chipped in five points.

Waseca edged Fairmont in second-round action, 16-12.

Nemmers scored four points for Red, while Ortega and Miller supplied three points apiece.

Kennedy Becker poured in 11 points to help Fairmont bounce back for a 29-13 victory over Rockford.

Ortega produced six points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Red, Miller scored five points, Carys Gudahl netted four points, while Maddy Landin grabbed four rebounds.
