Jaguar boys cagers knock off Nicollet; MCW edges GHECTML in Showcase

GRANADA — Cayden Fischer netted 18 points to pace a balanced scoring attack as the Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain Jaguars edged the Nicollet Raiders, 72-67, during a rescheduled Valley Conference basketball game Saturday night in Granada.

Fischer, who made 7 of 10 field goals, also grabbed six rebounds, while teammate Cael Jaskulke scored 14 points to complement grabbing six boards and dishing out three assists.

Matt Heckman delivered 15 points and doled out seven assists for the Jaguars, while post player Adam Heckman chipped in 14 points.

Carter Spear tallied seven points and distributed a game-leading eight assists for the Jaguars, while backcourt teammate Owen Wolter scored four points, distributed six assists and hauled in five rebounds.

The Jaguars connected on 29 of 57 field goals overall for 51 percent on the night and added a 12-for-18 effort at the free throw line.

The Jaguars held a 30-24 advantage over the Raiders at halftime.

Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain (16-6) travels to Trimont tonight to face Martin County West in the opening round of the Valley Conference Showcase.

Girls Basketball

Martin County West 40, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/ Truman/Martin Luther 34 — Marissa Whitehead netted a game-best 10 points to pace a balanced scoring attack as the Mavericks fended off the Jaguars by six during the final round of the Valley Conference Showcase on Saturday in Granada.

Whitehead also pocketed a team-best five steals, while teammate Liz Fisher delivered nine points, pulled down six rebounds and made three steals.

Kari Matejka produced eight points and garnered four steals for MCW, Emily Anderson collected six points and six rebounds, while Gabby Lange chipped in six points and five boards.

Emily Dunlop distributed three assists, grabbed six rebounds and pocketed three steals for the Mavericks, who made 14 of 50 field goals overall, including 2 of 12 from behind the 3-point arc. MCW also sank 10 of 19 free throws on the contest.

Jayme Balcom generated solid all-around numbers of eight points, seven rebounds and five assists to spearhead the Jaguars’ performance in Saturday’s Showcase action.

Katelyn Diegnau netted eight points and pulled down six boards for the Jaguars, while teammate Michaelah Petrowiak tallied six points and made five steals.

Eden Studer cleaned the glass for seven rebounds, while Lizzie Oothoudt produced five steals for the Jaguars, who connected on 11 of 47 shots from 2-point range. The Jaguars also hit 9 of 20 free throws, but made only 1 of 12 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.

The Mavericks held a 19-13 halftime lead before the Jaguars matched them with 21 second-half points.

The Jaguars (10-12) host Fairmont in a nonconference game Tuesday night in Granada. Martin County West (10-9) hits the road to Luverne tonight for a non-league contest.
