Tigers scratch Cardinals, 3-0

FAIRMONT — The Cardinal girls stayed close, but couldn’t overcome Marshall’s defense in a Big South Conference hockey matchup Thursday in Fairmont.

The Tigers used a second period goal and two third-period insurance goals to take down Fairmont Area, 3-0.

After neither team scored in the first period, Marshall’s Kaitlyn Timm broke the tie with 14:17 left in the second period.

Timm took the puck out of a scrum in the right faceoff circle then wristed a shot into the upper-left corner of the webbing to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.

Fairmont Area penalties then helped Marshall secure its lead.

Timm scored again in the third period on a power-play opportunity when she used a Leah Schaefer assist with 11:07 left in the matchup.

Schaefer put a shot on goal, which Fairmont Area netminder Hadley Artz blocked, but Timm grabbed the rebound and hit a wrist shot into the bottom-left corner of the webbing for Marshall’s first insurance goal. Timm’s goal came 30 seconds into Marshall’s first power-play chance of the third period.

Nine seconds into the Tigers’ next power-play try, Tessa Gannott capitalized on the five-on-four advantage when she used a double assist from Emelia Barker and Schaefer.

Barker passed up the ice to Gannott, who was waiting in the right faceoff circle, before Gannott fired the puck upper shelf on the right side of the webbing.

Fairmont Area head coach Ashley Olson said the Cardinals missed their opportunities.

“We just, tonight, had a hard time finding each other,” Olson said. “We had a lot of shots that were missing the net, a lot of passes that were missing sticks and because of that they ended up coming out on top. Hadley (Artz) had a good game in net, she kept us in it and made some big saves. All around, we just need to work a little bit harder through all three periods.”

Artz made 24 saves between the pipes for the Cardinals, including multiple one-on-one saves to keep Fairmont Area close.

Artz made eight saves in the first period to keep the matchup tied, then seven in the second period and nine in the final segment.

Emma Klenken stopped 22 shots to net the shutout win for the Tigers.

Marshall outshot Fairmont Area 27-22 in the matchup.

Fairmont Area (6-12-1, 4-7 Big South) plays host to Windom at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Martin County Arena. Marshall (10-9-1, 6-4 Big South) goes to Windom for a 7 p.m. matchup tonight.
