New Ulm beams by M.C. Area

WELCOME — New Ulm Area’s Kayla Goblirsch and Martin County Area’s Sabrina Segar locked up in an individual skills shootout during Thursday night’s Big South Conference gymnastics dual meet in Welcome.

Goblirsch outpointed Segar to capture the all-around competition, 37.0-35.875, to engineer the visiting Eagles’ 137.675-132.525 victory over the Magic.

Segar, who also placed second to Goblirsch on three individual events, denied her New Ulm Area rival a clean sweep by earning the gold medal on the floor exercise with a 9.3-scored performance. Goblirsch netted second at 9.15.

Goblirsch fended off the Magic trio of Segar, Anna Bachenberg and Emma Schultze during the vault competition. Goblirsch registered a first-place total of 9.5, Segar garnered second at 9.2, Bachenberg claimed third at 8.95, while Emma Schultze was fourth with an 8.85.

Goblirsch then received a winning score of 9.0 from the judges on the uneven parallel bars, while Segar paced the Magic with a runner-up mark of 8.5.

Segar then proved the only MCA gymnast to break the top four on both the balance beam and floor. The Magic co-captain placed third on the beam with an 8.875, while Goblirsch and teammate Emily Guggisberg collected the event’s top two places at 9.35 and 9.025, respectively. Ella Friederich took fourth on the beam at 8.725.

Goblirsch (9.15), Friederich (9.05) and Guggisberg (8.85) generated a 2-3-4 respective showing for New Ulm Area behind Segar’s winning ways on the floor exercise.

Bachenberg contributed an all-around score of 32.95 to the Magic’s performance, Hailee Schuett tallied a 32.025, while Emma Schultze chipped in a 31.65.
