Minnesota River hockey takes pair from Fairmont Area

LE SUEUR — A three-goal second period helped lead the Minnesota River Bulldogs to a 6-2 hockey win over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Thursday night.

Keely Olness got the scoring started for the Bulldogs in the Big South Conference clash off a double assist from Emma Seaver and Nicole McCabe at the 8:45 mark of the opening period.

Brooklyn Meyer hit an unassisted equalizer for the Cardinals with 14:30 left in the second period, before Olness scored her second — this time unassisted — at the 13:19 mark to put the Bulldogs ahead by one.

Hannah Goerndt scored the equalizer for Fairmont Area, using a Meyer assist at the 8:40 mark of the middle period before the Bulldogs scored four consecutive goals.

McCabe started the run at the 6:52 mark with a double assist from Olness and Seaver, then Seaver used a McCabe assist with 51 seconds left to go up 4-2.

Seaver scored again to start the third period off an assist from Sohpia doherty with 2 minutes left in the matchup, then Anna Pavlo used a double helper from Adrianna Bixby and Ella Boomgaarden with 32 seconds left to create the final margin.

Hadley Artz made 22 saves in net for the Cardinals, while Madison Kisor made 15 to net the win for the Bulldogs.

Minnesota River outshot Fairmont Area 28-17 in the matchup.

Fairmont Area (6-11-1, 4-6 Big South) plays host to Marshall at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Minnesota River 5, Fairmont Area 1 — Charlie Weick and Shawn Lehtinen each accounted for three points to help lead the Bulldogs past the Cardinals in Big South Conference hockey action Tuesday night in Le Sueur.

Weick started with an assist to Lehtinen for the first goal of the game at the 7:03 mark of the first period, before scoring a shorthanded goal off a Lehtinen assist with 2:19 remaining in the opening segment.

Weick assisted Brady Sowder on a shorthanded goal in the second period for his third point with 1:04 left before the second break.

Brooks Reicks scored a goal for the Bulldogs at the 15:02 juncture of the final period before Eli Anderson kept the Cardinals from being shut out with a goal off a double helper from Carson Kuhl and Hudson Artz with 9:56 left.

Matt Fink scored the final goal of the game off a Lehtinen assist during a power-play opportunity, for Lehtinen’s third point, with 3:54 left.

Minnesota River outshot Fairmont Area 42-11 in the matchup.

Carsen Musser made 37 saves between the pipes for the Cardinals, while Mitch Kotek made 10 to net the win for the Bulldogs.

Fairmont Area (3-13, 1-9 Big South) plays host to Marshall in Big South Conference action at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
