Huskies edge Magic for MCA Invite title

Segar defends all-around to pace MC Area

WELCOME — Sabrina Segar obviously likes competing in the Martin County Area gymnastics invite.

The Magic junior co-captain successfully defended her all-around championship Saturday in Welcome as host MCA narrowly missed duplicating its team crown from a year ago.

Segar captured her second consecutive gold medal in her home invite’s all-around competition by generating a season’s-best point total of 35.175 on the strength of winning two individual events and placing second on the other pair.

Segar literally tumbled her way to first-place honors over Luverne’s Ella Reisdorfer on the floor exercise, 9.35-9.15, while striking gold — via tiebreaking criteria — after matching Jackson County Central’s Carson Schneekloth with 8.775s on the balance beam.

Segar also placed second to Luverne’s Meghan Witte on the uneven parallel bars, 8.425-8.25, while outdueling JCC’s Payten Benda and Waseca’s Emily Farley for the silver medal on the vault with 8.8s. JCC’s Jordan Schneekloth won the vault crown with an 8.9.

Segar’s third consecutive invitational top-three all-around showing, along with teammate Anna Bachenberg’s sixth-place all-around total of 32.375, helped pace MCA’s second-place team total of 132.6 — less than three-tenths of a point behind invite champion JCC’s 132.825.

For the third consecutive year, the host Magic and sectional rival Huskies have traded the team trophy in Welcome. Segar and Bachenberg produced a respective 1-3 all-around showing to power MCA to the invite’s championship in 2019. Ironically, JCC edged MCA for the team hardware in 2018 as Segar pocketed runner-up all-around accolades as a freshman that season.

“I didn’t even remember that I won the all-around here last year,” Segar said modestly. “While we didn’t win today, we did improve on our score (130.7) from Thursday’s (dual-meet) win against St. Peter, so that’s a positive.”

Segar planted her Tsukahara vault to pocket second place at 8.8 during the Magic’s opening team rotation before Bachenberg, Ellie Schultze and Abi Chavez joined the MCA co-captain on the medals podium in the post-invite awards presentation by producing top-six showings on the next three pieces of equipment.

Bachenberg delivered a fifth-place mark of 7.825 on the uneven parallel bars to pack extra punch to Segar’s second-place score of 8.25. Blue Earth Area’s Addison Armstrong, who topped the Bucs’ fifth-place team total of 122.95, captured fourth place on the unevens with a 7.85-scored effort.

“I thought my first vault went well, but it could have been better,” said Segar. “Completing my giants on the bars definitely gave me confidence and helped me get up for the beam.”

Segar connected her back handspring into a back tuck to highlight her winning ways on the 4-inch-wide apparatus, while Bachenberg and Ellie Schultze shared the sixth-place medal on the beam. Bachenberg and Schultze each earned scores of 8.3 on the judges’ scorecards.

“Our floor was a lot stronger today,” Segar said in reference to the one event that the Magic topped the five-team field by netting 34.175 points during their final rotation of the invite. “(Assistant coach) Blessing (Reynolds) focused on our floor routines in practice on Friday and I think that helped us a lot today, but I think we can still get more sassy in that area.”

Segar completed a one-and-a-half on her initial tumbling pass on the floor, executed her front handspring front full during the middle sequence and capped her winning 9.35 score with a full on the final pass.

Abi Chavez contributed a fourth-place medal performance of 8.55 on the floor to add needed scoring punch to the Magic’s performance.

Emma Schultze scored 31.525 in the all-around for MCA, while teammate Hailee Schuett chipped in a total of 31.4.

Armstrong produced 31.5 points in the all-around to pace Blue Earth Area, while teammate Haley Kalis finished only two-tenths behind with a 31.3. Kalis garnered a sixth-place medal on the floor exercise with an 8.5.

Tailor Douglas chalked up 30.55 points in the all-around for BEA, while Jazmyn Lunz chipped in a total of 28.25.

Martin County Area plays host to New Ulm in a Big South Conference dual meet on Friday in Welcome, Blue Earth Area plays host to Worthington on Tuesday night, while Jackson County Central travels to Marshall on Thursday for a conference dual meet.
