SCL downs FHS in BLC semifinal; MCW wins NYA crown

MANKATO — Zach Longueville made six 3-pointers to pace a game-high 22-point performance to guide the St. Croix Lutheran Crusaders to a 60-42 victory over the Fairmont Cardinals in the semifinals of the Kwik Trip Holiday basketball tournament on Saturday night on the Bethany Lutheran College campus.

St. Croix Lutheran (5-2) advances to face unbeaten Minnesota Valley Lutheran (9-0) in tonight’s 8:30 p.m. championship game in BLC’s North Gym in Mankato. MVL coasted to an 81-46 semifinal win over St. Clair on Saturday.

Fairmont (5-2) plays St. Clair (4-4) in tonight’s 6:30 p.m. third-place game in BLC’s North Gym.

Longueville connected for four trifectas during the first half to help the Crusaders built a 26-18 lead over the Cardinals by intermission.

Post player Wyatt Frank, who erupted for 30 points during Fairmont’s quarterfinal victory over New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Friday night, delivered 18 points in Saturday’s semifinal.

Frank, who netted 12 first-half points, also pulled down five rebounds.

Zach Jorgensen generated nine points, grabbed a team-best six rebounds and distributed a team-high four assists for the Cardinals, while teammates Carter Bell and Caden Baarts each supplied five points.

The Cardinals made 17 of 47 field goals, including just 3 of 19 from 3-point range, and only 5 of 12 free throws on the game.

Xavier Garcia tallied 12 points and Owen Bushaw chipped in 11 for the Crusaders, who drained 11 of 25 shots from 3-point distance, 5 of 13 inside the arc and a staggering 17 of 22 at the free throw line for 77 percent.

Fairmont 18-24–42

St. Croix Lutheran edged Fairmont, 54-46, during semifinal junior varsity Kwik Trip Holiday tournament action Saturday in Mankato.

David Maakestad scored 15 points to top the Cardinals, Jacob Crissinger tallied 11 points, while Gavin Junkermeier chipped in 10 points.

Fairmont plays St. Clair in a 1:30 p.m. third-place game today at the BLC’s North Gym in Mankato.

NYA Invitational

Martin County West 61, Paynesville 56 — Power forward Wyatt Geistfeld narrowly missed recording a triple-double performance in powering the Mavericks to the Norwood Young America basketball invitational’s championship on Saturday.

Geistfeld produced a team-best 15 points, a co-team-high 10 rebounds, a game-high nine assists and three steals to top Martin County West’s five-point victory over Paynesville.

Zach Anderson neared double-double territory by scoring eight points and garnering a co-team-best 10 boards to complement three blocked shots for the Mavericks.

Angel Reyes tallied 11 points, four rebounds and three steals for MCW, Derek Dunlop supplied 11 points and five rebounds, while Tanner Sinn chipped in nine points and six rebounds.

Geistfeld’s and Anderson’s double-figure efforts on the boards paced the Mavericks’ 37-27 rebounding advantage.

The Mavericks connected on 17 of 36 shots from 2-point range, 7 of 23 behind the 3-point arc and 6 of 8 at the free throw line.

Grady Fuchs netted a game-high 18 points for Paynesville, Carter Wessel generated 17 points, while Levi Bast chipped in 13 points.

Martin County West (7-1) plays host to Edgerton in the second game of a varsity girls-boys doubleheader on Thursday night in Sherburn.

Buc Holiday Invite

Truman/Martin Luther/GHEC 70, United South Central 53 — Three Jaguar players all reached double figures in scoring to steer a balanced attack to a 17-point triumph over the Rebels during the third-place game of the Buc Holiday Invite on Saturday in Blue Earth.

Cayden Fischer and Cael Jaskulke each generated 17 points for the Jaguars, with Fischer doling out four assists and Jaskulke pulling down six rebounds.

Matt Heckman produced solid all-around numbers of 14 points, five rebounds, a co-game-best five assists and four steals for the Jaguars, while Adam Heckman neared double-double territory with nine points and 10 rebounds. Adam Heckman also distributed four assists.

Carter Spear netted seven points, a co-game-best five assists and three steals for the Jaguars, who made 20 of 32 shots from 2-point distance and 6 of 15 behind the 3-point arc.

Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain (8-1) travels to New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday night.

The Blue Earth Area Bucs’ holiday boys basketball tournament championship game against Jackson County Central on Saturday was postponed due to icy road conditions in Jackson County.

Blue Earth Area (3-3) plays host to Maple River on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Girls Basketball

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 52, United South Central 41 — Post player Michaelah Petrowiak netted a game-best double-double performance to guide the Jaguars to an 11-point victory over the Rebels during the third-place game of the Buc Holiday Invite on Saturday in Blue Earth.

Petrowiak topped all players by scoring 16 points to complement grabbing 10 rebounds, while teammate Jayme Balcom delivered 12 points, a game-high six steals and four assists.

Makayla Hall supplied seven points and four rebounds to the Jaguars’ winning ways, Emily Stauter scored six points, Lydia Steinhaus chipped in five points, while Abby Calkins pulled down four rebounds.

Hannah Olson netted 12 points to top USC.

The Jaguars made 18 of 61 field goals, including 1 of 6 from 3-point range, and added 15-for-25 shooting from the free throw line.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther (6-4) travels to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday night.

The Fairmont Cardinals girls basketball team’s championship game against the host Windom Area Eagles in the Windom Area Holiday Classic on Saturday was cancelled due to icy travel conditions in southwestern Minnesota.

Fairmont (5-4) plays host to Blue Earth Area on Friday night at Cardinal Gym.

The Blue Earth Area Bucs’ holiday girls basketball tournament championship game against Jackson County Central on Saturday was postponed due to icy road conditions in Jackson County.

Blue Earth Area (1-7) travels to Fairmont on Friday night.
