No. 3-ranked Red Bulls down No. 4 Bucs in wrestling clash

BLUE EARTH — The Martin County Red Bulls racked up seven pins to take a 52-21 dual-meet win over the Blue Earth Area Bucs during Big South Conference wrestling action.

The Class AA No. 3-ranked Red Bulls claimed points in 10 matches against the Class A No. 4-ranked Bucs on Thursday night in Blue Earth.

No. 4-ranked 106-pounder Jesse Potts got the Red Bulls started when he pinned Caleb Langager in 1:28.

The Red Bulls’ Kain Sanders followed with a 9-1 major decision against 113-pound opponent Carson Sturtz. Sanders built his lead on three takedowns, an escape and two technical violation points.

Class AA No. 2-ranked 120-pounder Lucas Jagodzinske kept the Red Bulls rolling with a 5-4 decision over Class A No. 9-ranked Ty Peterson.

Peterson jumped ahead with a takedown and a two-point near-fall early in the first period, but a Jagodzinske escape and takedown cut Peterson’s lead to 4-3 at the first buzzer.

Jagodzinske started the second period in the down position and forced a reversal to take the lead, then maintained control through both the second and third periods to take his one-point win.

Class AA No. 2-ranked 126-pounder Jaxson Rohman built the Red Bull lead to 16-0 with a 9-4 decision over Class A No. 7-ranked Davis Sunken.

Rohman utilized his takedown-and-release strategy, forcing four takedowns and escaping from the down position at the beginning of the second period to build his lead.

Jacob Beeler got the Bucs their first points of the dual meet when he earned a slap of the mat against Gage Cyphers.

Beeler built a 4-2 lead on a takedown and reversal before forcing Cyphers’ shoulders to the mat at the 3:23 mark.

No. 3-ranked 138-pounder Connor Simmonds needed only 1:22 to pin Caleb Beeler and continue the Red Bulls’ scoring.

No. 5-ranked 145-pounder Jaxen Klinkner then collected six points for BEA when the Red Bulls’ Cale Steuber was forced to leave the mat due to injury.

Red Bull head coach Adam Williamson said the team will monitor Steuber’s injury, but it shouldn’t keep him off the mat for long.

No. 2-ranked 152-pounder Payton Anderson got the Red Bulls scoring again when he pinned Parker Meyers in 3:27, then No. 3-ranked 160-pounder Miles Fitzgerald earned a slap of the mat in 1:48 to beat Cole Warmka.

Williamson said the matchup with BEA gave him confidence for the Red Bulls’ next tournament.

“It was a good effort all around by everybody,” Williamson said. “We got some new faces in to wrestle tonight with Gage (Cyphers) and Shayne (Steinbrink). It was good to see what those guys can do and they’ve earned their chance to help the varsity team. I thought our varsity guys came out and went after offense, we went after bonus points, we went after pins and that’s how we put that score up tonight. Going into the weekend I’m very confident we can get after the Redwood tournament.”

Martin County’s No. 4-ranked 170-pounder Nathan Simmonds took a forfeit before Max Olson earned six points with a pin of Kean Hicks in 3:38 at 182 pounds.

Nick Frank got BEA six points with a pin in 1:35 of Shayne Steinbrink at 195 pounds, then the Red Bulls’ Jacob Rahn pinned Nick Lawrence in 1:40 at 220 pounds.

BEA head coach Randy Wirtjes said the matchup will help both squads down the line.

“I think Adam (Williamson) would agree there were a lot of good matchups, a lot of good matches and it was good for both our teams,” Wirtjes said. “… I think we just wanted to see the good matchups. Down the road at the end of the season, matchups like this will make us better. We’re happy with how our guys wrestled, they’re (Red Bulls) just a very solid lineup.”

Ian Cornelio scored BEA’s final points with an 8-4 decision over Everardo Hernandez at 285.

Cornelio built a 5-2 lead in the final period before Hernandez forced a reversal to get within 5-4, but Cornelio escaped and took down Hernandez before riding out the third period.

Martin County (3-0) and BEA (3-1) travel to Redwood Valley at 4 p.m. today to begin the Redwood River Riot tournament.
