Thompson, Hanson power Fairmont runners to 3rd at Milaca

MILACA — Laura Thompson and Macy Hanson each produced top-10 finishes to power the unranked Fairmont Cardinal girls cross country team to a third-place showing in Division 3 of the Milaca MegaMeet on Saturday.

Thompson, who’s ranked fifth in the Class A individual state poll, covered the 5,000-meter run at Stone’s Throw Golf Course in 20:10.4 to garner fourth place overall to pace the Cardinals’ team total of 160.

Hanson, a seventh-grade phenom, crossed the finish line with a time of 20:43.7 to pocket sixth place overall to help Fairmont trail only Class A No. 1-ranked Staples-Motley (82) and No. 2-ranked Perham (89) in the girls’ divisional team standings.

“Overall, I thought we had a good day despite all of the weather challenges,” said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk, whose girls lineup topped a pair of state-ranked squads in No. 5 Lake City — fourth with 172 — and No. 8 North Shore — seventh with 236. “The rain definitely affected the times, but not the places.

“Laura (Thompson) continues to compete with some of the best runners in the state, while our pair of seventh-graders — Macy Hanson and Carys Gudahl — turned in some very good performances for us.”

Carys Gudahl generated Fairmont’s third-best time of 22:18.4 to claim 33rd in the team scoring, while Tabitha Thatcher and Hannah Neusch rounded out the Cardinals’ counting marks during the elite competition in Milaca. Thatcher posted a time of 23:05.5 to place 56th in the team portion of the division, while Neusch netted 61st by covering the 5K distance in 23:14.7.

Emma Gudahl pocketed 76th in the team competition in 23:40.5, while Sara Sundblad rounded out Fairmont’s effort in 112th in 24:52.5.

Marissa Whitehead crossed the finish line in 21:15.2 to capture 16th overall to engineer Martin County West/Martin Luther’s 10th-place Division 3 effort of 322.

Katie Hartke netted a 21:40.7 to place 27th overall for MCW/ML, while Caitlin Whitehead turned in a time of 23:54.3 to net third on the Mavericks and 82nd in the team competition.

Emily Matejka (24:25.6) and Kari Matejka (24:38.5) completed MCW/ML’s counting scores in 93rd and 104th, respectively.

Brianna Morrow (24:42.6) and Ivy Kokoruda (26:46.1) rounded out the Mavericks’ effort in 106th and 150th, respectively, among the team competition.

In the Division 3 boys’ 5K race, William Saari continued his stellar long-distance season by placing 12th from a team perspective to steer Fairmont to 12th place in the team standings.

Saari crossed the finish line in 17:47.6, while teammate Connor Artner (18:35.4) pocketed 26th in the team event to help pace the Cardinals’ team total of 352.

No. 2-ranked Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd won the D3 boys crown with 85, fending off No. 4-ranked Staples-Motley’s runner-up score of 98.

“Will Saari continues to lead us in each meet, while the rest of our guys give us everything they have each and every time out,” said Bonk. “Freshman Will Niestrath had a good showing for us during his first varsity 5K race ever.”

Niestrath produced the fifth and final counting score for the Cardinal boys program by covering the course in 21:19.6 for 140th in the team competition.

Tony Ortega (19:50.4) and Tyrell Zieske (20:24.9) netted third and fourth, respectively, on Fairmont varsity boys lineup. Ortega placed 74th in the team scoring category, while Zieske claimed 100th.

Alex Cruz (21:49.4) and Gavin Artner (22:52.1) rounded out the Cardinals’ performance in 155th and 185th, respectively.

Jake Lewis delivered the 15th-best individual time — 17:59.9 — in the team portion of the D3 boys race to steer MCW/ML to 18th place with 484 points.

Riley Cole (20:21.4), Isaiah Johnson (20:32.4), Kylar Larson (20:34.9) and Grant Koehnen (21:39.8) completed the Mavericks’ counting scores during the elite meet. Cole placed 98th in the team competition, Johnson took 109th, Larson pocketed 111th and Koehnen placed 151st.
