Mavericks winless at Hummel volleyball invite

JACKSON — The Martin County West Mavericks went winless during the Carolyn Hummel Memorial volleyball invitational on Saturday at Jackson County Central High School.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove defeated MCW, 25-19, 25-9; Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda posted a 25-11, 25-14 win over the Mavericks; Triton topped MCW, 25-12, 25-18; while Slayton downed the Mavericks in the final round, 25-23, 25-13, 25-10.

Logan Kosbab generated a team-best 11 kills for the Mavericks during the four-match span to complement 24 digs and 13 points behind 25-for-28 serving.

Shaylynn Anderson distributed a team-leading 29 set assists, scooped up 13 opponents’ spikes and tallied five points on 15 of 16 serving for MCW, while teammate Sami Meyer drilled five kills, tallied eight digs and went 16-for-16 serving with five points.

Jenna Clow topped the Mavericks’ defense with 28 digs, doled out four set assists and went 12 of 14 at the line, while Bella Bicknase went 15-for-17 serving with seven points, including three aces.

Taylor Elliott went 7 of 9 serving for five points, including three aces, for MCW; Olivia Anderson smacked seven kills; Gabby Lange supplied six kills, Emily Dunlop pounded five spike-winners, while Grace Bicknase dished out four set assists.

Martin County West (3-10) plays host to St. Clair on Tuesday night in Trimont.

St. Peter Invite

The Blue Earth Area Bucs went winless during Saturday’s St. Peter Invitational. New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva opened pool play with a 25-7, 25-17 win over BEA, Glencoe-Silver Lake netted a 25-10, 25-11 second-round victory over the Bucs and Windom Area downed BEA 25-15, 25-8 in third-round pool play. Mankato Loyola fended off BEA in bracket play, 26-24, 25-12.

Liz Beeler doled out eight of her tourney-high 31 set assists against NRHEG, while teammate Brita Hougen tallied two of her 11 kills and made six of her 23 digs overall in the opener. Hougen also went 7-for-7 serving for four points.

Mari Vargas smacked three kills, Eloise Blair generated 25 of her tourney-best 58 digs and Natalie Huse went 4-for-4 serving to round out the Bucs’ effort against NRHEG.

Hougen tallied three kills and three digs to go with 4-for-4 serving against GSL, Beeler dished seven set assists to complement 6 of 6 serving, Blair recorded eight digs and went 4-for-4 at the line, while Heidi Herrmann chipped in three kills.

Blair made 11 digs and served 4-for-4 against Windom Area, Miya Gustafson tallied three points on 5-for-5 serving, while Hougen, Gabby Haaland and Herrmann each cranked three kills.

Beeler doled out eight set assists, made six digs and went 4-for-4 serving, while Hougen added five digs.

Beeler collected 12 digs and eight set assists against Loyola, Hougen produced nine digs, three kills and three points on 6 of 6 serving, while Alicia Machacek added three kills.

Blair delivered 14 digs, Gustafson tallied nine digs to go with 7-for-7 serving and five points, while Haaland added four points via a 6-for-6 serving effort.

Blue Earth Area (0-12, 0-4 Big South) travels to St. James Area for a conference match on Tuesday night.

Maple River Invite

The Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars compiled a 1-3 record during Saturday’s Maple River Invite in Mapleton.

Host Maple River swept its two-game match with the Jaguars, ML/GHEC/Truman edged Cedar Mountain 2-1 in a three-game clash, while Sibley East and St. James Area each netted 2-0 decisions over the Jaguars.

No individual or team statistics were provided for the tournament.

Martin Luther/GHEC/Truman (4-9) travels to Lake Crystal on Thursday night.

Spirit Lake Tour

The North Union Warriors dropped a pair of matches during the Spirit Lake, Iowa, tournament on Saturday.

Newell-Fonda posted a 21-11, 22-20 decision over North Union before Spirit Lake netted a 21-6, 21-16 victory over the Warriors.

No individual or team statistics were provided for the tournament.

North Union (1-10) hits the road to Spencer, Iowa, tonight.
