Cardinals earn 4th soccer shutout by downing Jaguars

FAIRMONT — Diverse pressuring offense and ball-hawking defense extended the Fairmont Area girls soccer team’s winning streak to six in a row.

Sami Lenort produced two goals, Emma Schultze generated one goal and one assist, while Lexi Kaufman doled out two assists to power the Cardinals to a 7-0 non-league triumph over the Jordan Jaguars on Saturday at Kot Soccer Complex.

“We worked to get a lot of good looks on goal early, but only converted a couple in the first half,” Fairmont Area head coach Matt Nielsen said in reference to the red-and-white lineup’s 12-2 shots-on-goal edge during the opening 40 minutes. “Once again, we chipped quite a bit of paint (off the pipes).”

Kaufman worked through defensive traffic and grazed her right-wing 30-yard rocket off the crossbar at the 28:35 juncture of the first half, but would quickly redeem the miss only 52 seconds later.

Kaufman spotted Rayah Quiring near the doorstep with a pinpoint pass before Quiring skidded a grass-hugging right-to-left shot into the twine for a 1-0 Fairmont Area lead at 27:43.

Two minutes later, Lenort produced her initial goal of the contest by weaving her way along the left end-line with a nifty cross-over move before tapping a left-to-right shot just out of Jordan starting goalie Jenna Kluxdal’s stretched-out reach for a 2-0 margin by intermission.

“At halftime, I told them to keep pitching zeroes (on the opponent’s side of the scoreboard), and we’ll always stay ahead,” Nielsen said with a wry smile. “We just overwhelmed them with our efficiency to open the second half.”

Nielsen’s post-game analysis proved as true as a Joni Becker strike on the sprint as Fairmont Area converted its first three shots into goals to put the final decision in little doubt.

Carissa Saxton chipped a perfect lead pass to Joni Becker racing down the left wing and the Cardinals’ senior striker drilled a low liner into the net only 2:09 into the second segment.

Emma Schultze then managed to maneuver her way through Jaguar defenders with a bounce-the-ball-off-their-shins strategy before finding a gap inside the right pipe to boot a cross-shot for a point at 35:59.

Lenort then displayed her leg strength by drilling a left-wing laser by Kluxdal off a Kaufman precision pass to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 5-0 at the 33:46 juncture.

Emma Schultze then produced an assist via a solid lead pass to Alyssa Wiederhoeft, who kicked home a left-wing goal for a 6-0 margin with 12:51 to go.

Mackenzie Householder then lofted a perfect 25-yarder from the point that carried up and over Jordan backup goalie Sloane Shimek’s reach and into the top right shelf for an unassisted goal with 2:49 left.

Fairmont Area netkeeper Cadence Becker collected her fourth shutout between the pipes this season by turning away three Jordan shots on the game.

Kluxdal tallied a game-best 11 stops before giving way to Shimek in net 9 minutes into the second half.

McKayla Chambers cleanly broke up a Jaguars’ breakaway opportunity with her closing speed and footwork at the 11-minute mark in the second half to highlight the Cardinals’ shutout defensive performance.
