Fairmont, Blue Earth Area volleyball fall at Big South Showcase

REDWOOD FALLS — The Pipestone Area Arrows posted three consecutive game wins, 25-14, 25-10, 25-12, over the Fairmont Cardinals during the season-opening Big South Conference volleyball cross-over event Saturday at Redwood Valley High School.

Setter Sabrina Segar distributed a co-team-best four assists, nailed two kills and connected on 8-for-9 serving to help pace Fairmont’s effort.

Setter Andrea Westcott doled out a co-team-best four assists and completed 5 of 5 serves for the Cardinals, while hitter Cassidy Schultz paced the frontline attack with three kills and three solo blocks to complement five digs.

Sophie Johnson tallied a team-best nine digs to go with 5-for-5 serving for Fairmont, Cambrie Anderson went 5-for-6 serving, while Madysen Allen produced one ace of 3-for-4 serving and added three digs.

Fairmont (0-1) travels to Waseca on Tuesday night for a conference dual meet.

Worthington 3, Blue Earth Area 0 — The Trojans swept a three-game match with the Bucs, 25-8, 25-15, 25-15, during the season-opening Big South Conference cross-over tournament Saturday in Redwood Falls.

Liz Beeler distributed a team-leading dozen set assists for Blue Earth Area, while teammate Eloise Blair led the defensive effort with eight digs to complement two kills.

Maci Frommie generated three kills and two ace blocks for the Bucs, while Heidi Herrmann and Brita Hougen each supplied two kills and one ace block.

Miya Gustafson connected on 6 of 7 serves for three points, including one ace, for Blue Earth Area, while Kiera Osmundson and Gabby Haaland each tallied two points at the line. Osmundson went 3-for-4 with an ace, while Haaland was 4 of 4 serving. Haaland also made four digs and had one ace block.

Mari Vargas rounded out the Bucs’ performance by recording four digs.

Blue Earth Area (0-1) travels to St. Peter on Tuesday night.
