Martins sweep series with Tracy

TRACY — The Fairmont Martins advanced to the Region 13C amateur baseball tournament by eliminating the Tracy Engineers in a best-of-3 First Nite/Gopher League playoff series on Sunday.

Levi Becker hammered a first-inning grand slam home run to trigger Fairmont’s eventual 11-3 triumph over the Engineers during Game 2 on Sunday in Tracy. The game was postponed from Saturday due to rain and thunderstorms.

The Martins captured Game 1 of the series, 6-1, Wednesday.

Fairmont (19-4) opens regional tournament action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night against an opponent and at a site to be determined during today’s seeding meeting.

Levi Becker drilled his bases-loaded HR to ignite the Martins’ five-run offensive outburst in the top of the first inning on Sunday.

Spencer Chirpich doubled, singled and drove in one run for Fairmont, while teammate Ethan Hurn singled twice for one RBI.

Lance Becker, Blake Crawmer and Mitchell Prafke each contributed a single to the Martins’ winning ways.

Tyler Tennyson pitched a scoreless fourth, fifth and sixth innings in relief to earn the victory for Fairmont. The right-hander recorded five strikeouts.

Hurn allowed one run and struck out four batters in hurling the initial three frames for the Martins.

Jon Traetow allowed two runs in two innings of relief after following Tennyson to the mound, while Crawmer pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
