JORDAN — Heavy rain dampened the Day 1 scores at the Class AA state golf meet Tuesday at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

The Blue Earth Area Bucs’ boys team of Manning Lane, Hunter Spencer, Braden Gudahl, Gaven Bruellman, Max Ehrich and Ashton Lloyd shot a 329 to place fifth after the opening 18-hole round.

Spencer led the Bucs with a 39-39-78 on the par-72 course. Spencer made birdies on the par-3 third and 15th holes, sank par putts on six holes and connected for a rare eagle on the par-5 10th hole. Spencer’s 6-over 78 was good for a tie for 20th as an individual through the first half of competition.

Lane ended second for the Bucs with his round of 39-41-80. Lane parred his first three holes and six total on the front nine, then added six more pars on the back nine. Lane’s 80 put him tied at 29th as an individual.

Gudahl shined through the front nine, connecting on seven pars and a birdie on the par-3 fifth hole for a front-nine 37. Gudahl then put together three pars on the back nine for a 46 for an 83.

Bruellman posted the final BEA counting score by making three pars for a front-nine 44, then birdied the par-3 15th hole for a back-nine 44 to combine for an 88.

BEA head coach Travis Armstrong said the rain might have mentally got to his players.

“We played pretty decent on the front side,” Armstrong said. “Then the rain picked up a bit, I don’t know if we didn’t adjust to the conditions, but maybe we let it bother us a bit. The scores were elevated on the back side. We’ll see how everyone else does as teams. The weather should be nice (today), we’ll give them a run.”

Ehrich birdied the par-5 first hole to start the day, then parred Nos. 3, 4, 6 and 8 to build a front-nine 41, before combining three pars for a back-nine 50.

Lloyd parred three holes to build a Day 1 score of 48-46-94 to round out the Bucs.

“I think for probably all the teams here, it’s going to be who rests up and who rebounds well and makes a mental comeback more than a physical one,” Armstrong said. “Everybody that’s here is a good team so it’s probably not a mechanical issue, it’s a mental one. It’s gonna be confidence. We’ll work on that tonight at the hotel and come back and give it a whirl.”

Holy Family Catholic held the Day 1 lead with a 310, while Detroit Lakes is second at 317 and Hill Murray and Cloquet/Esko are tied for third with 325.

Lloyd tees off of No. 10 at 8:15 a.m. to start the Bucs’ succession of golfers, with Ehrich (8:24 a.m.), Bruellman (8:33 a.m.), Gudahl (8:42 a.m.), Lane (8:51 a.m.) and Spencer (9 a.m.) next.

Fairmont junior Bergen Senf ended Day 1 in fifth overall with a 4-over 76 during the Class AA girls meet.

Senf started with an unfortunate first shot of the day into the water, causing a bogey on Hole 1, but came back with a birdie on the par-4 second hole to get back to even. Senf hit five pars on the front nine for a 2-over 38, before sinking seven par putts on the back nine, including the final four.

“I missed a ton of birdie putts and I made a couple interesting errors. If you told me those were the errors I would make, I wouldn’t expect that,” Senf said. “But it was good. …”

Fairmont head coach Brad Haugen said Senf showed mental toughness by rebounding from her first shot of the day.

“Just started with the one bad shot off No. 1 and you always know their mental toughness based off how they respond to it,” Haugen said. “Bergen finished out the hole strong to get a bogey, then got a birdie on two and just played solid golf the rest of the way. There’s a few putts she would have liked to have made, but, hey, sometimes they fall, sometimes they don’t. All of a sudden if we make those (today) we’re right in the running.”

Senf will start Day 2 on the first hole at 12:36 p.m. today.

“A repeat of today would be nice,” Senf said about her goals for Day 2. “I don’t have any big thing in my mind. I just want to play a good game in my head, that’s been my main goal coming into the state tournament and honestly all through sections. … If it clicks, it clicks; if it doesn’t, it doesn’t and that’s fine.”
