Area athletes make tracks to state meet

MANKATO — Four individual Cardinal girls and two relay teams advanced to the Class A state track & field meet, while three individual Fairmont boys and two relay teams advanced from the Section 2A Meet on Saturday in Mankato.

Along with the Cardinals advancing competitors, four area tracksters moved on as well. All the area competitors move on to the state meet on Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Fairmont’s Joni Becker and Andrew Moeller each advanced in three events.

Becker placed first in the open 400 with a time of 1:00.04, ahead of Sibley East’s Audrey Parrot, who finished in 1:01.55 for second. Becker’s time places her seventh all-time in Fairmont history.

Becker also advanced as part of the 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams.

The 4×200 team of Karalyn Closs, Jenna Gustafson, Grace Higgins and Becker ran a time of 1:48.04 for second behind Glencoe-Silver Lake’s time of 1:46.88, while the 4×400 team of Closs, Corene Moeller, Laura Thompson and Becker finished in 4:10.89 just behind Belle Plaine’s 4:04.93.

Thompson also advanced in the 3,200 when she and Jordan’s Basia Babcock ran side-by-side throughout the entire race to finish less than a second apart. Thompson finished second at 11:42.38 for the eighth-best time in Fairmont history, while Babcock was a step ahead at 11:41.96.

Two Cardinal girls advanced in field events.

Ellie Hernes finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 36-6.5 placing her second all-time in Fairmont history and breaking her own freshman record, behind Jordan’s Madi Kes at 36-9.75. Bethany Linse cleared the state standard of 5-2 in the high jump for a fifth-place finish. Blue Earth Area’s Sophie Keister finished second at 5-2, behind Maple River’s Madi Schirmer, who cleared 5-4. St. Clair’s Sophia Cazier and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown’s Toryn Richards also advanced on the state standard.

Martin County West’s Makena Larson advanced in both the shot put and the discus. Larson heaved the shot 39-6.5 for first in front of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet’s Lakesha Carter, who threw 38-9.5. Larson then threw the discus 112-3 for first in front of Madi McGrane’s 110-6 for Belle Plaine.

Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said the girls had many strong performances.

“I think the girls in the 4×200 and 4×400 came through big time,” Bonk said. “Joni is going to state in three events. … Grace Higgins, this is her fourth state meet in a row. Some of the veterans really came through in a great way. Then you think of Ellie Hernes, she was doing something all day and her very last event was an amazing triple jump to get to state. Natalie Tonne almost made it in the shot, Bethany Linse has never cleared 5-2 before, that was such a great performance for her. Then what do you say about Laura Thompson? That two-mile was one of the most exciting races of the day I think, then to come back exactly 23 minutes later and run a 400 like that was, that takes a special person.”

On the boys’ side, Andrew Moeller advanced in the 800-meter run, the 4×200 and the 4×400.

Moeller beat Jordan’s Symon Keiser by a step in the 800 with a time of 1:59.44 to Keiser’s 1:59.74, placing Moeller eighth in Cardinal history. Moeller was third coming around the penultimate turn and was able to overtake both Keiser and MCW’s Kolton Larson in the final 150 meters. Larson finished third at 2:00.7.

In the 4×200, the Fairmont team of Hudson Artz, Dylan Kennedy, Moeller and Caden Baarts finished second at 1:32.23, eighth best in Fairmont history, behind Jordan’s 1:30.83, while the 4×400 team of Jordan Wolter, Artz, Moeller and Kennedy took first in 3:28.66 in front of Jordan’s 3:30.78.

Kennedy also took second in the open 400 with a time of 51.26, behind Jordan’s Max Ceplecha at 50.99.

Hayden Berhow finished second in the high jump when he cleared 6-1, while New Richland-Heartland-Ellendale-Geneva’s Jacob Schuller also cleared 6-1 for first. BEA’s Brady Olsen also cleared 6-1 for third.

BEA’s Thomas Lindsey took the gold in the pole vault when he cleared 13-9, while Tri-City United’s Jackson Nesmoe also cleared 13-9 for second. BEA’s Ben Babcock leaped 20-9.5 in the long jump for second behind Jordan’s Thomas Dietel at 21-4.75.

Bonk said he was pleased with the boys’ qualifying performances.

“Going in, those two relays, Dylan in the 400 and Andrew in the 800 were what we were really hoping to get through,” Bonk said. “It’s never a sure thing, those races, even the 4×200 at a top meet are pretty taxing. I didn’t know if they’d have enough juice left, especially for the 4×400, but they did and I’m very proud of that performance. … Hayden going the third year in a row at the high jump, that was his first time this year at 6-1, I know he’s been at that plateau and he’s been a little frustrated so even an inch is important.

“We had some stuff that missed state that was great, too. Will Saari ran a heck of a 3,200, the 4×800 ran well. Field events-wise, Heinze made the finals in the triple jump. We had a lot of good stuff.”

MCW’s Samantha Hecht finished third in the 300-meter hurdles at 47.89, missing qualifying for state behind Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s Lauren Dimler at 46.99.

Fairmont’s Natalie Tonne took third in the shot put at 37-2, good for eighth all-time in Cardinal history, behind the second-place finish of 38-9.5.

Baarts took fourth in the open 200 with a time of 23.62, BEA’s Babcock earned third in the triple jump with a leap of 42-2.75 and Fairmont’s Riley Chaffee took third in the shot put with a throw of 43-6.5.
