Fairmont girls claim track quadrangular

FAIRMONT — The Cardinal girls placed first in all but two events to take the overall win in their final meet before sub-sections.

The only events a Fairmont girl didn’t claim gold in were the open 200 and the 4×800 relay, with a Cardinal finishing second in each.

Five Fairmont girls finished first in two events as either an individual or part of a relay, while Joni Becker claimed three golds.

Becker won the open 400 on the cold, rainy and windy day with a time of 1:04.13, while Laura Thompson finished second at 1:06.15 and Emily Frank took fourth at the 1:10.81 mark.

Joni Becker also took part in the winning 4×200 relay alongside Karalyn Closs, Jenna Gustafson and Grace Higgins, with the crew timing in at 1:52.47, while Joni Becker teamed up with Ellie Hernes, Gustafson and Brooklyn Pfeffer for the winning 4×400 relay time of 4:29.59.

Along with her win in the 4×200, Closs took the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.47, while Gustafson claimed second at 13.59 and Cadence Becker finished third with a time of 13.85.

Higgins (27.91) and Corene Moeller (29.13) took second and third, respectively, in the open 200, while Kaylean Thingstad claimed fourth at 29.57.

Tabitha Thatcher claimed first twice, with one gold coming in the 800-meter run (2:48.76) and one in the 1,600 (5:47.43).

Lauren Davis finished second in the 800 at 2:50.54, while Sara Sundblad claimed third at 2:58.65.

Thompson took first in the 3,200-meter run at 12:45, while Hannah Neusch finished second at 13:36.9.

Fairmont swept the top-six spots in both hurdle events. McKayla Chambers took first in the high hurdles at 17.01, while Hernes finished second in the high hurdles (17.16) and claimed gold in the 300-meter hurdles (51.48). Brooklyn Meyer finished third in the high hurdles at 17.93, while Hadley Artz (53.32) and Claire Nemmers (53.87) took second and third, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles.

Fairmont’s 4×100 ‘A’ relay team of Cadence Becker, Chambers, Meyer and Higgins claimed gold at 54.78, while the ‘B’ team Briana Joseph, Angelica Kerekes, Sophie Johnson and Thingstad finished in 59.19 for second.

Fairmont’s ‘B’ 4×200 squad of MacKenzie Householder, Nemmers, Thingstad and Artz took second at 1:59.77, and the Cardinals’ ‘B’ 4×400 team of Closs, Rayah Quiring, Carissa Saxton and Moeller finished in 4:30.62 for second.

Fairmont’s 4×800 relay team of Saxton, Pfeffer, Frank and Moeller took second at 11:00.35.

Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said he was glad to have had the event to prepare the Cardinal girls for Thursday’s sub-section meet.

“It was fun,” Bonk said. “The rain was a little nasty and overall I think times were hurt by the wind, it was really strong, although a couple races, the 100, 200 and high hurdles, were probably helped by the wind. … Lot of decent performances, I’m really glad we had a meet. We needed a meet this week for the girls. I also tried a few things on some events to try to compare a few people, that turned out to be helpful. … The event that really stands out off the top of my head is the discus. Both Cadee and Natalie were at 103 feet, neither one had come even close to that in their life time.”

The Cardinals claimed at least two of the top three spots in every field event.

Savanah Baker won the high jump when she cleared 5-0, while Bethany Linse placed second at 4-6 and Hannah Linse finished third at 4-6.

Ellie Schultze won the pole vault when she made it over the 8-0 bar, while Householder cleared 7-6 for third.

Quiring took gold in the long jump when she landed at 15-3.25, while Frank hit the sand at 14-7.5 for third and Meyer hit at 14-6 for fourth.

Quiring also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 32-5.25, while Hernes took gold at 34-5.25 and Cassidy Schultz landed at 32-3.25 for third.

Natalie Tonne and Cadence Becker finished first and second, respectively in both the shot put and the discuss. Tonne heaved the shot 34-2, while Cadence Becker tossed it 30-8.75. Both Tonne and Cadence Becker threw the discus for personal records, Tonne heaving it 103-4 and Cadence Becker tossing it 103-1.

The Cardinal boys did not compete in the meet because they are participating in today’s True Team State Meet in Stillwater at 3:45.

The Fairmont girls get back in the starting blocks Thursday when they host the Section 2A, Sub-Section 5 meet at Bob Bonk Track.
