Fairmont tennis nets 4-3 win over St. Peter

ST. PETER — Fairmont singles netter Thomas Klanderud and the Cardinals’ doubles combination of Evan Carlson and Aaron Hendricks produced pivotal three-set victories to pace a 4-3 team tennis triumph over the St. Peter Saints on Thursday in St. Peter.

Tied at 3-all team-wise, Klanderud and Saints opponent Marty Anderson closed out the Big South Conference dual meet with a good-to-the-last-shot fourth singles clash.

Klanderud captured the opening set by a 6-3 decision before Anderson rallied to pull off an 8-6 win in the second-set tiebreaker to force a decisive third segment. Klanderud regrouped to outslug Anderson in the third set, 7-6 (7-2), to clinch the winning team tally.

Carlson and Hendricks generated Fairmont’s only doubles point by outlasting Daniel Nadeau and Mikinley Prafke at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

Nadeau and Prafke claimed a 6-3 opening-set win before Carlson and Hendricks assembled a stellar comeback to pocket the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-3.

Tyrell Zieske and Blake Haugen produced the Cardinals’ other two team points from the singles bracket. Zieske rolled to a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Liam Dixon at the No. 1 position, while Haugen prevailed in a 6-0, 7-6 (9-7) triumph at the No. 3 spot.

Harrison Dean and Xavier Schugel outdueled the Cardinals’ Stuart Smick and Jack Hagen in a three-setter at No. 3 doubles.

Smick and Hagen claimed the opening set by a 6-4 decision before Dean and Schugel rallied for back-to-back set wins of 6-3 and 7-5, respectively, to net the team point for St. Peter.

Matthew Pettis and Ken Ringler pocketed back-to-back 6-2 set wins over Fairmont’s Jeb Green and Pete Ortega at first doubles, while the Saints’ Bailey More defeated Ameya Komaragiri at second singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Fairmont (3-5) travels to Stewartville today for a 4:30 p.m. non-league dual meet before playing St. Michael-Albertville on the Knights’ home court at 11 a.m. Saturday.
