NEW ULM — Both the Fairmont Cardinal boys and girls claimed first place in quadrangular track & field action Monday night in New Ulm.

Fairmont’s Andrew Moeller and Laura Thompson each won two individual events, with Moeller also taking part in a winning relay.

Moeller took first in both the boys 800 (2:04.03) and the 1,600 (4:55.15), while running the third leg of the winning 4×400 relay team of Jordan Wolter, Hudson Artz, Moeller and Dylan Kennedy, which finished the relay in 3:35.3 to help add to the Cardinal boys’ first-place finish of 122.5 points.

Caden Baarts finished first in the 200-meter dash in 23.68, while placing seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.66). Hayden Berhow (11.79) and Josh Heinze (12.15) placed 11th and 13th in the 100-meter dash, respectively. Wolter (24.6), Brandon Williams (25.09) and Dominick Ortiz (25.1) placed eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 200-meter dash.

Kennedy won the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.71, while Williams placed fifth in 58.42.

Artz finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.46, while Dawson Gatewood finished right behind him in 2:19.05 for fourth.

Connor Artner finished second to Moeller in the 1,600-meter run in 5:08.03, while Darrian Kueker finished sixth in 5:26.

William Saari claimed gold in the 3,200-meter run in 10:52, while Kueker took bronze in 11:32.

Tony Nuss took first in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.5, while Shawn Oberbeck followed close behind, finishing in 18.4 for third.

Nuss (47.59) and Oberbeck (49.21) went on to finish second and fourth, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles.

The Fairmont 4×100 relay team of Berhow, Nick Thate, Wolter and Josh Heinze finished third with a time of 47.84, while the 4×200 relay team of Thate, Artz, Kennedy and Baarts claimed silver in 1:37.03 and the 4×800 relay team of Dawson Gatewood, Matthew Anderson, Saari and Artner also took second in 9:41.12.

In the jumps, Berhow took gold in the high jump when he cleared the 5-10 bar, while Moeller finished third after clearing 5-4.

Thate (10-0), Anderson (9-6) and Justin Olson (8-6) gave Fairmont a one-two-three finish, respectively, in the pole vault, while Berhow finished second in the long jump with a leap of 19-6 and Heinze finished fourth with a jump of 17-9 3/4.

Williams claimed first in the triple jump for the Cardinals with a leap of 37-1, while Heinze claimed third when he hit the sand at 36-10.

Fairmont claimed second through fourth in the shot put when Jacob Rahn heaved the shot 42-8 for second, Riley Chaffee threw it 42-0 for third and Ortiz tossed it 38-11 for fourth.

Rahn then finished second in the discus with a throw of 104-3, while Chaffee finished third with a heave of 96-7 1/2.

In the girls’ events, Joni Becker placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.4, while Rayah Quiring (28.86) and Grace Higgins (28.93) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash adding up points to help the Fairmont girls’ first-place finish of 85 team points.

Becker went on to win the 400-meter dash in 1:03.68, while Quiring finished fourth in 1:07.8 and Corene Moeller finished fifth in 1:08.64.

Thompson won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.37 and the 1,600-meter run when she crossed the finish line at 5:50.3.

Hannah Neusch gave the Cardinals a top-three finish in the 3,200-meter run when she finished third with a time of 13:41.

McKayla Chambers finished third in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.5, while Ellie Hernes finished fifth in 18.25, Brooklyn Meyer finished sixth in 18.4 and Hadley Artz finished seventh in 18.45.

Hernes then finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 52.18 with Artz close behind, finishing fifth in 56.63.

The Fairmont 4×100 squad of Meyer, Jenna Gustafson, Higgins and Chambers finished third with a time of 56.05, while the 4×200 team of Meyer, Gustafson, Higgins and Karalyn Closs finished second in 2:01.06.

The Cardinals’ 4×400 crew of Carissa Saxton, Closs, Thompson and Becker finished second with a time of 4:33.03 and the 4×800 team of Brooklyn Pfeffer, Claire Nemmers, Saxton and Moeller took gold in 11:23.03.

In the field events, Savanah Baker claimed third in the high jump when she cleared the 4-10 bar, while Bethany Linse and Cadence Becker each cleared the 4-6 bar for fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ellie Schultze took bronze in the pole vault when she cleared the bar at 7-0, while Rachel O’Connor, Mackenzie Householder and Baker each cleared the 6-0 bar for fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Hernes went on to take second in the long jump (15-0 1/2) and first in the triple jump (34-0), while Meyer took fourth in the long jump (14-7 3/4) and Baker took fifth in the triple jump (32-03).

Natalie Tonne (31-4), Cadence Becker (31-3) and Householder (31-1) took third, fourth and fifth in the shot put, respectively. Cadence Becker then took second in the discus with a heave of 83-9.

The Cardinals go to Wilson Field in Blue Earth for the Bucs’ Invite at 4:15 p.m. Friday.
