Fairmont tracksters tie for 1st, net 2nd at East triangular

MANKATO — The Fairmont girls took the 4×400 relay by a yard to come back and tie Mankato East for first place at the East Triangular on Friday in Mankato.

Going into the final girls event, it was announced in the stadium that East was winning 77-75 over Fairmont. The Cardinals’ 4×400 combination of Karalyn Closs, Carissa Saxton, Corene Moeller and Laura Thompson finished in 4:27.75, one yard ahead of the East squad, which finished in 4:27.9. The win gave Fairmont five team points to the three East gained, to tie the meet at 80 apiece.

Fairmont’s Joni Becker placed top three in three events, while Thompson won two individual events.

Joni Becker finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.9, while McKayla Chambers finished fourth in 14.62. Becker also placed third in the 200-meter dash in 28.8 and won the open 400 in 1:04.07.

Jenna Gustafson placed third for the Cardinals in the 400 with a time of 1:11.08.

Thompson won the 800-meter run (2:33.8) and the 1,600-meter run (5:38.54) to help power her excellent day.

Sarah Krumholz placed third in the 3,200 with a time of 13:05.91, while Chambers won the high hurdles in 17.94. Brooklyn Meyer placed third behind Chambers in 18.33 and Ellie Hernes finished fourth in 18.97.

Hernes then won the 300-meter hurdles in 53.82, while Hadley Artz placed third in 55.73.

Fairmont’s 4×100 of Gustafson, Chambers, Meyer and Cadence Becker finished second in 55.49 behind East’s time of 53.68.

The Cardinals’ 4×200 team of Closs, Gustafson, Mackenzie Householder and Rayah Quiring finished second in 2:00.39, behind East’s time of 1:50.22, while the 4×800 team of Krumholz, Brooklyn Pfeffer, Lauren Davis and Claire Nemmers finished second in 11:48.58.

In the field events, Savanah Baker took third in the high jump by clearing 5 feet even, while Ellie Schultze took first in the pole vault at 7-0.

Fairmont swept the top four spots in the triple jump when Hernes cleared 32-7 1/4 for first, Quiring jumped 32-7 1/4 for second, Baker landed at 32-1 for third and Nemmers hit the sand at 30-1 1/4 for fourth.

Brooklyn Meyer took third in the long jump with a leap of 14-6 1/4.

Natalie Tonne (30-7 1/2) and Cadence Becker (30-2) finished third and fourth in the shot put, respectively, while Becker went on to finished second in the discus with a toss of 80-4.

In the boys portion of the meet, Fairmont placed second with a team score of 70.5 points with Hayden Berhow and Caden Baarts each collecting two individual victories, while Andrew Moeller and Hudson Artz won one individual event and two relays each.

Baarts took gold in the two shortest sprints with a time of 12.1 in the 100-meter dash and a time of 24.19 in the 200-meter dash.

Artz finished first in the 400-meter dash when he crossed the finish line in 54.61, while Jordan Wolter crossed in 57.68 for third.

Moeller collected his solo win in the 800-meter run in 2:09.77, while Matthew Anderson ran a 2:32.03, good for fourth.

Connor Artner ran the mile in 5:01.79 for third place, while finishing the two mile in 11:12.21 for second. Darrian Kueker also ran the two mile for the Cardinals, finishing in 11:34.66 for fourth place.

Tony Nuss placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 18.66.

The Fairmont 4×100 team of Berhow, Nick Thate, Wolter and Josh Heinze placed second in 47.72, while the 4×200 relay team of Thate, Artz, Moeller and Baarts took gold with a time of 1:36.33.

The 4×400 relay team of Artz, Nuss, Wolter and Moeller also claimed first with a time of 3:43.3 with Moeller just holding off Mankato East’s team, which finished in 3:44.46.

Berhow collected wins in the high jump (5-10) and long jump (19-11), Moeller finished second in the high jump (5-8) and Heinze took third in the long jump (18-7).

Thate took first in the pole vault when he cleared the bar set at 11-6.

Berhow placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 38-9 1/4, while Brandon Williams placed fourth with a jump of 37-6.

Jacob Rahn (40-7 1/2) and Riley Chaffee (40-4) finished third and fourth in the shot put, respectively, while Rahn also finished third in the discus with a heave of 111-6.

Fairmont competes against Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet and host Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Tuesday in New Ulm.
