Cardinal boys soccer earns 2nd win in a row

WASECA — One more makes a winning streak.

The Fairmont Area Cardinals boys soccer team won its second in a row by downing the Waseca Bluejays, 6-3, Thursday night in Waseca.

Kaleb Hoye led the Cardinals with a hat trick. Hoye’s first goal came off an assist from Abram Sanchez with 18:23 remaining in the first half. Hoye’s second goal came with 8:26 remaining in the half off an assist from Max Seifried. Hoye’s third came early in the second half with 33:56 remaining off an assist from Dan Brummond.

The Cardinals trailed 2-0 early, but fought back with the three goals from Hoye to take the lead.

The Bluejays answered with a goal in the second half on a penalty kick, but that was the final they could muster as Sanchez and Brummond combined for three goals to secure the win.

Sanchez’s received an assist from Matthew Anderson with 11:41 remaining in the game for his first of two goals.

Matthew Anderson helped Brummond with an assist with 9:10 left before Sanchez took an assist from Brycen Lutterman for the final goal with 5:41 remaining.

Tyson Geerdes made nine saves for the Cardinals.

Hoye ended with seven shots on goal, while Brummond contributed three and Sanchez had two.

Fairmont (2-5, 2-3 Big South) plays host to New Ulm at 7 p.m. Monday night.

Girls Soccer

Fairmont Area 1, Waseca 1 (tie) — Junior forward Joni Becker converted senior midfielder Grace Higgins’ assist into the equalizer to help the Cardinals salvage a tie with the Bluejays during Big South Conference action Thursday night in Waseca.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Becker took a pinpoint pass from Higgins and hammered home Fairmont Area’s only goal with 12:33 remaining in regulation.

Freshman goalkeeper Cadee Becker recorded three saves for the Cardinals. Bluejays netminder Erika Hertzog turned away five Fairmont Area shots on goal.

Jayde Pederson staked Waseca to a 1-0 margin by finding the net with 8:54 remaining in the first half.

Fairmont Area (5-1-1) plays host to Mankato East at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kot Soccer Complex.

Waseca squeezed by Fairmont Area in junior varsity action, 1-0, Thursday in Waseca.

Kalie Hanna made five saves between the pipes for the Cardinals, while teammate Kaiden Boerner tallied three stops.

Allison Jensen generated a game-best four points, including a hat trick, to power Fairmont Area to a 5-2 triumph over Waseca during C-squad action Thursday in Waseca.

Jensen set up the Cardinals’ first goal — off the foot of Alysen Lindquist — via an assist before Jensen tallied an unassisted net-finding shot.

Jensen produced another goal off a pass from Karissa Newville before Emma Scheppmann converted a penalty kick for Fairmont Area’s fourth goal. Jensen capped the victory with another unassisted goal.

Cardinal netminder Abby Cihoski made nine saves to garner the win.
