B.E. Area aces field at GSL’s tennis tourney

GLENCOE — The Blue Earth Area Bucs girls tennis lineup opened the season by capturing top team honors at the Glencoe-Silver Lake Invitational on Tuesday in Glencoe.

Blue Earth Area’s three doubles tandems combined for a perfect 9-0 mark en route to three dual-meet triumphs. The Bucs defeated United South Central by a 5-2 decision, shut out the host Panthers 7-0 and downed Sibley East 5-2.

Blue Earth Area’s Arika Howard and Tea Armstrong produced a 6-0, 6-2 victory over USC’s Madison Loegering and Trinity Seedorf at No. 1 doubles, served a 6-2, 6-3 loss to GSL’s Grace Draeger and Justine Helmbrecht, and coasted by Sibley East’s Brianna Kranz and Norma Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1.

McKenna Dutton and Maddie McCleary reeled off three straight No. 2 doubles victories for the Bucs.

Dutton and McCleary tallied a 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) win over USC’s Alyson Swanson and Katie Dylla, posted a 6-2, 7-5 over GSL’s Addie Stuewe and Lily Schmidt, and delivered a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Sibley East’s Harley Haggenmiller and Mikayla Holmes.

The Bucs’ third doubles combination of Sydney Blagg and Britt Howard outlasted USC’s Lauren Zebro and Sarah Mantor, 7-5, 6-4, rolled by GSL’s Katelyn Lemke and Kenzie Davis, 6-2, 6-1, and netted a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Sibley East’s Rachel Widmer and Ashlyn Bullert.

Blue Earth Area Nos. 3 and 4 singles players Julia Hanson and Carissa Engesser, respectively, compiled 3-0 marks during the season-opening tournament.

Hanson notched back-to-back 6-2 set wins over USC’s Daylyn Huper, bested GSL’s Sasha Wilheit in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, and glided past Sibley East’s Ariel Butler, 6-2, 6-1.

Engesser served back-to-back 6-1 set losses to USC’s Kori Elmer, posted consecutive shutout set wins over GSL’s Di Fleck, and captured a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sibley East’s Emily Tuchtenhagen.

Bucs’ No. 1 singles netter Macie Stevermer bested GSL’s Katie Doolittle, 6-1, 6-3, but lost her respective matches to USC’s Carly Weber in a 6-2, 6-0 fashion and fell to Sibley East’s Faith Young by a 6-2, 6-0 decision.

The Bucs’ second singles player Malarie Scholtes bested GSL’s Allie Harpel, 6-1, 6-2, before dropping matches to USC’s Delaney Weber and Sibley East’s Lindsey Flieth.

Weber netted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Scholtes, while Flieth outdueled the Buc junior by a 7-5, 6-3 decision.

Blue Earth Area (3-0) plays host to United South Central in a 4 p.m. nonconference dual meet Thursday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.
