Martins handle Lakers, 12-1, in 7

FAIRMONT–The Martins took care of the Hanska Lakers easily Friday night at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont, winning the game, 12-1 in seven innings.

The Martins got started early in the first, scoring three runs and never looking back. Leadoff hitter Levi Becker one-hopped the fence in left field to open the game with a double.

Levi Becker advanced to third on Luke Becker’s fly out, then was brought in by Jack Waletich’s RBI single.

Waletich went first-to-third on a Tyler Tennyson single.

Adam Schmidt brought Waletich home with a sacrifice fly, and Christian Petschke brought Tennyson home on a single.

Jordan Petschke followed with another single, but he and Christian Petschke were stranded on base to end the inning.

It was all the offensive help Schmidt would need. The Martins’ starting pitcher threw all seven innings, striking out five Lakers and walking three while giving up one unearned run on two hits in the ballgame.

Hanska got its lone run in the fourth inning, after Gary Wilfahrt reached on an error. He took second on a passed ball.

He advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and then was awarded home when the ball rolled out of play as the Martins tried to turn a double play on the fielder’s choice.

Fairmont got the run back in the bottom half of the fourth. Parker Monsen reached base with a single, then swiped second. Levi Becker knocked him in with a single to push the lead to 4-1 Fairmont.

Then Fairmont blew the doors off in the fifth.

The team batted around, scoring five runs while only getting three hits. Waletich led the inning off with a walk, then stole second.

On a hot comebacker to the mound off Tennyson’s bat, Waletich found himself stuck in no-man’s land between second and third.

Waletich was elusive enough to escape the rundown and gain third anyway. Tennyson stole second, and the Martins had two runners in scoring position with no outs. After Schmidt and Christian Petschke were retired, pinch hitter Tanner Nawrocki stepped to the plate a drew a walk to load the bases.

Dustin Sololik worked the count to 3-1 before before poking a single to right-center field, which allowed Waletich and Tennyson to score, while Nawrocki moved to third. Monsen stepped in and ripped the first pitch he saw to the outfield for a double to put runners on second and third for Levi Becker.

Levi Becker sent a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a 2-run single to extend the Martins’ lead to 9-1.

Fairmont added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cross the 10-run-rule threshold and send everyone home early.

Waletich led off with another single, then moved into scoring position on defensive indifference.

Schmidt walked to put two runners on and Christian Petschke knocked his second hit of the night through the infield for his second RBI as Waletich scored and Schmidt moved to second.

Schmidt advanced to third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Tanner Nawrocki, as the Lakers were unable to turn the double play to escape the inning.

Sololik reached on an error as Schmidt crossed the plate for the 11th run for the Martins. Monsen knocked in Nawrocki with an RBI single for good measure to close the scoring for the day.

Levi Becker was 3-for-5 on the day with a double, a run and three RBIs.

Waletich finished 2-for-3 with three runs, a walk and an RBI.

Monsen also swung a good bat, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.

Fairmont hosts Windom at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
