Blue Earth Area 7th, 9th at True Team track meet

STILLWATER — Osakis squeezed past Luverne by 1 1/2 points to capture the girls championship, while Holdingford outdistanced the boys field by 87 points during the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association’s Class A True Team state track & field meet on Saturday in Stillwater.

Two-time defending Class A state champion Blue Earth Area, which qualified for its 12th consecutive True Team state berth, placed ninth in the girls division with 189 points.

Holdingford literally ran away with the Class A boys True Team state championship by outdistancing runner-up Pine Island, 462-375.

The Blue Earth Area Bucs boys team, which was making its first state appearance since 2013, pocketed seventh place with 267 points.

Seth Becker produced the Blue Earth Area boys’ lone individual championship by capturing top honors in the 300-meter hurdles in a winning time of 42.94 seconds. Becker also generated points by garnering third place in the high hurdles with a time of 16.57.

Grant Strukel utilized his long running strides to produce a pair of top-nine finishes for Blue Earth Area. Strukel claimed fifth place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:50.37, while contributing a ninth-place performance of 4:52.93 in the 1,600-meter run.

Grant Madetzke and Reed Krieger each collected fifth-place showings for the Bucs in the field events. Madetzke hurled the discus to a mark of 109-1, while Krieger cleared 11-6 in the pole vault.

Adam Griffin and Clayton Johnson each delivered points with sixth-place showings. Griffin ran a 54.65 in the 400-meter dash, while Johnson cleared the bar at 5-4 in the high jump.

Rylee McGuire rounded out the Blue Earth Area boys’ effort by capturing eighth place in the pole vault at 11-0.

In the girls’ competition, Melissa Hagedorn and Nicole Lium shared top honors in a field event to pace Blue Earth Area girls’ effort on the day. Hagedorn and Lium each struck gold by clearing 9-6 in the pole vault, while Lium also cleared 4-10 in the high jump to garner fourth place. Hagedorn added a sixth-place showing in the high hurdles with a time of 18.49.

Heidi Herrmann collected ninth place in the high hurdles by turning in a time of 18.74, while Hannah Johnson sprayed the sand at 14-3 to net eighth place in the long jump.

Lindsey Norman rounded out the Bucs girls’ effort by heaving the shot to a mark of 34-7 to capture sixth place in the field event.

Blue Earth Area competes in the Minnesota State High School League’s Section 2A, Sub-Section 6 Meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at United South Central’s track facility in Wells.
