Waseca tennis eliminates BEA

WASECA — The No. 8-seeded Waseca Bluejays made a clean sweep of the singles and doubles brackets to shut out the No. 9-seeded Blue Earth Area Bucs, 7-0, during Section 1A Team Meet play-in boys tennis action Thursday in Waseca.

Waseca (4-14) advances to face Class A, No. 2-ranked and top-seeded Rochester Lourdes in a 4:30 p.m. sectional team quarterfinal in Rochester on Monday.

Blue Earth Area will compete in the Section 1A Individual Meet starting at noon Thursday at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.

Jacob Butterfield netted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jack Frundt during first singles action, while Bluejays teammate Charlie Huttemier coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Spenser Timmerman during No. 2 singles play.

JP Swanson flip-flopped Huttemier’s final score in prevailing over Marcos Gonzalez at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Jay Lewer capped Waseca’s singles-bracket sweep by outlasting Jack Barke in a three-setter at third singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Waseca’s Jim Hoehn and Oswaldo Badillo combined court skills at No. 1 doubles to squeeze out a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision over Parker Kienitz and Dylan Herfindahl, while Tom Donelan and Jordane Kouba-Priebe shut out Vern Johnson and Nick Frundt at the No. 2 spot in the lineup, 6-0, 6-0.

Ritchie Diedrich and Jacob Hulscher outlasted the Bucs’ third duo of James Greer and Jacob Olson in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
