Waseca golfers edge Fairmont via a tiebreaker

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals boys golf team’s dual meet with the Waseca Bluejays was met with bittersweet feelings.

The Cardinals were happy to play in good weather and had four golfers shoot in the 40s. The team score resulted in a 179 tie with the Bluejays, who edged out the Cardinals based on the fifth score on Tuesday at Interlaken Golf Course.

The Bluejays’ Gabe Stoesz shot a 48 to Fairmont golfer Alexander Moeller’s 59.

“It was a close one today. Waseca came and edged us out with the fifth golfer, but it was good competition. It was nice to have a good day and good weather out there,” said Cardinals assistant coach Ryan Stevens, who was celebrating his birthday at the meet. “It’s nice to have four scores in the 40s. That’s what we’ve been shooting for all season long … We’re trying to get ourselves ready for the 18-hole meets coming up.”

Much like the team score, Cardinals golfer Tanner DeWar and Bluejay Nick Rolling tied for medalist honors with a 42.

“Tanner’s really getting there,” Stevens said. “He struggled a little bit to start the season. But, as of late, he’s really been coming on strong.”

DeWar shot four consecutive pars on Hole Nos. 5-8, while Rolling had five total.

Colby Grotte had the next best score for the Cardinals, penciling a 44. Bryan Grotte shot a 46 and Tom Havnen was a stroke behind with a 47.

Carter Lloyd finished the meet with a score of 60 for Fairmont.

“We just would like to see everyone take that next step, sneaking into the high 30s,” Stevens said. “I’m very pleased with their progression so far.”

Griffin Siefert provided the Bluejays with a nine-hole score of 43 and Andrew Weber shot a 46. Jack Priebe birdied on Hole No. 9 to fill out a score card of 48 in the win.

Sam O’Brien shot a 52 for the Bluejays.

Fairmont plays Blue Earth Area in a dual meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Minn-Iowa Golf Course in Elmore.
