Trojans’ 4-run 6th trips FHS

FAIRMONT — Worthington ace left-hander Tucker Sorenson’s fastball, curveball and change-up, in conjunction with a game-time temperature of 40 degrees, cooled off Fairmont’s aluminum bats on Friday.

Sorenson fired a three-hit complete-game gem, while cleanup hitter Easton Sauerbrei launched a pivotal two-run home run during a four-run top of the sixth to guide the visiting Trojans to a 4-1 Big South Conference baseball victory over the Cardinals at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

“Collin (Steuber) pitched well today and for the most part, we played good defense,” said Fairmont head coach Todd Sukalski. “We just didn’t hit the ball well today — it’s that simple.”

With Sorenson and Steuber locked up in a classic scoreless pitchers’ duel through four complete innings, the hometown Cardinals spoiled the Trojan southpaw starter’s shutout bid during the bottom of the fifth.

Steuber drew the only bases-on-balls that Sorenson issued during his seven-inning stint on the mound before teammate Lance Becker eventually reached second base on a fielder’s choice following a rundown between second and third.

Jordan Wolter then lined a sharp single to center with one out, plating pinch runner Christian Engeman for a 1-0 lead. Wolter’s hit was only the second of the game for Fairmont, with Brady Allen producing the first in the bottom of the first inning.

Trailing by a run, the Trojans spoiled both Steuber’s no-hit and shutout bids by plating four runs on five hits during the top of the sixth.

Austin Svalland legged out an infield hit with one out, wheeled to third on Shawn Hurley’s single and scored on the Cardinal catcher’s throwing error to second base to knot the game at 1-all.

Hurley, who reached third on the miscue, trotted home with the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run on Sorenson’s sacrifice fly to right field.

Eli Gaul then doubled with two out before coasting home when Sauerbrei drilled a towering two-run round-tripper over the left-field fence for a 4-1 edge.

Fairmont reliever Jacoby Tennyson struck out one during a perfect seventh inning on the mound before Sorenson worked around Steuber’s leadoff single during the home half of the inning to preserve his complete-game gem.

Sorenson struck out three and walked one in going the distance on the hill to earn the victory for the Trojans.

Steuber gave up four runs — three earned — on five hits, struck out one and walked one in six innings of work to absorb the loss.
