Cardinals softball outslugs Trojans

WORTHINGTON — Courtney Williams and Taylor Nuss each hammered home runs to help the Fairmont Cardinals outslug the Worthington Trojans, 11-8, during a Big South Conference softball clash on Friday in Worthington.

Only 24 hours after perennial Big South powerhouse New Ulm halted Fairmont’s school record-setting seven-game winning streak, Williams and Nuss topped the Cardinals’ 12-hit offensive surge.

Nuss produced two hits and scored a pair of runs for Fairmont, while Williams collected two RBIs and crossed the plate three times.

Sydnea Brinkman singled, doubled and produced one RBI for the red-and-white visitors, while Mariah Gochanour generated two hits, one RBI and scored two runs.

Mallory Gochanour singled, doubled and scored two runs, Ericka Kim supplied two hits and one run scored, while Taylor Crissinger added a single and a run scored for the victorious visitors.

Fairmont right-hander Jordan Ehlert allowed eight runs on seven hits, issued nine walks and recorded eight strikeouts in six innings of work to earn the victory.

Kaitlyn Freese faced only three batters in pitching a perfect seventh inning in relief to preserve the Cardinals’ win.

Fairmont (8-1) plays host to Marshall in a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader on Monday at Cardinal Park in Fairmont.

Mallory Mosloski produced three hits to help power Fairmont to a 17-2, four-inning triumph over Worthington during junior varsity action Friday in Worthington.

Madison Moeller tripled and singled for the Cardinals, while Sydney Hainy and Lexus Wojtanowicz each contributed two hits to the winning effort.

Jen Moeller allowed two runs on two hits, struck out five and walked one in four frames to earn the complete-game victory for Fairmont (8-0).

Madelia/Truman 13, Heron Lake-Okabena 3 (6 innings) — Madison Mueller produced three hits, including a home run and a double, to generate a game-best four RBIs in powering the Jayhawks to a 10-run rule victory over the Wildcats on Friday in Madelia.

Ahead 8-3, the Jayhawks erupted for five runs with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning to exit the ballpark early. Brytni Drevlow went 3-for-4, including a double, and scored twice for M/T, while Carissa Caraway went 2-for-4 with a double en route to two RBIs to go with two runs scored.

Chloe Hartman, Cara Teigum, Briana Ardolf, Lydia Studer and Mikayla Klinkner each generated two of the Jayhawks’ 18 hits on the game. Teigum doubled and Ardolf tripled, with both players collecting one RBI. Teigum and Studer each scored two runs, with Studer and Klinkner each driving in one run.

Klinkner allowed two hits in four shutout innings of relief to net the win for the Jayhawks. Klinkner struck out four and walked one.

M/T starting pitcher Courtney Davis gave up three earned runs on three hits, walked five and struck out three in two innings of work.

Madelia/Truman (3-9, 0-2 Valley) travels to St. Clair on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 5, Martin County West 4 — Jody Hansen and Megan Sellner each contributed two hits — including a triple — to the Knights’ one-run win over the Mavericks on Friday in Sleepy Eye.

Alli Beltz singled and doubled in the win.

Syndee Hein provided the Mavericks with two hits and two RBIs. Madison Klima finished with two hits, while Jenna Steele produced a two RBI single.

Anna Lux went the distance, allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikouts two walks to pick up the win.

Jordan Stahl took the loss and gave up five runs on eight hits while fanning 10 in six innings of work.

Martin County West (5-2, 2-0 Valley) plays at Nicollet at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
