Area wrestlers named all-BSC

FAIRMONT — Six wrestlers from both Blue Earth Area Bucs and Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls teams earned Big South All-Conference team honors.

Red Bulls grapplers Jaxson Rohman, Payton Anderson and Collin Steuber, all of whom finished second at the Class A state meet, earned spots on the team. Zac Ringnell, Jordan Wolter and Mario Maldonado also pocketed All-Conference honors for the Red Bulls, who finished third in the East Division.

BEA’s Zach Buseman, who finished fourth at the Class AA state tournament, Max Ehrich, Wyatt Tungland and Jesus Quintero pocketed all-conference honors. Jared Armon and Trevor Oppedal joined their Bucs teammates on the conference team.

The Bucs won the overall Big South Conference championship with a 34-23 triumph against Worthington, and finished first in the East Division.

Magic, Buc earn conference nod

FAIRMONT — The Martin County Area Magic had three gymnasts and the Blue Earth Area Bucs had one gymnast earn spots on the Big South All-Conference team.

Magic senior Bryanna Peterson, who finished sixth in the all-around competition and third in the uneven bars at the Class A individual state meet, closed out her prep gymnastics career with a spot on the team. Teammates Sabrina Segar and Brielle Meade also made the all-conference team.

The Bucs’ Melissa Hagedorn also earned all-conference honors.

8th graders 3rd at tournament

FAIRMONT — Fairmont’s eighth-grade boys basketball team went 2-1 to place third at the Austin Tournament.

Fairmont beat Rochester Lourdes, 48-40, but then lost by a 54-45 decision against Stewartville. The team earned a third-place finish by defeating SMA Rochester, 59-39.

Jake Melsha led Fairmont in scoring with 42 points in the tournament. Jackson Utermarck notched 30 points, while Tanner Rosch and Thomas Klanderud scored 19 points apiece over the three games. Steven Schrunk added four points.

Fairmont plays in a tournament on Sunday, March 19 at Marshall.
