Cardinals hockey team breezes by Trojans, 9-0

FAIRMONT — Sadie Sandersfeld lived every high school goaltender’s dream on Thursday night. The Fairmont Area senior netminder shed her flat extended hockey stick, blocker pads and fortified mask to hit the Martin County Arena ice outside of the crease.

Sandersfeld capped the Cardinals’ offensive avalanche by distributing an assist to Myah Lytle for the home team’s second power-play goal against winless Worthington with 1:30 remaining in the third period.

Cori Emler produced a game-best three points on the strength of two goals and an assist, Mackenzie Householder and Joni Becker delivered two goals apiece, and Anna Nordquist doled out a pair of assists to power the Cardinals to a 9-0 triumph over the visiting Trojans in Fairmont.

“We (coaching staff) got the chance to play everyone tonight, and hopefully, those minutes will be a confidence-builder for us,” said Fairmont Area head coach Ashley Olson.

With a confident Emily O’Connor turning away all 13 Trojan shots she faced en route to the shutout victory, Householder — a seventh-grade center — delivered back-to-back goals to trigger the Cardinals’ 18-3 shots-on-goal edge during the initial 17-minute segment.

Fairmont Area needed only 14 seconds into its first power-play opportunity to light the lamp for a quick 1-0 lead. Lytle and Emler combined forces on a double-assist before Householder buried the biscuit at the 12:34 juncture.

Ironically, the sure-handed Householder needed only 15 more seconds to single-handedly double the Cardinals’ margin. Householder corraled the loose puck and tallied an unassisted goal for a 2-0 lead.

Nordquist later displayed her offensive prowess by rushing the right wing before splitting a pair of Worthington defenders to swat a shot off Trojan netminder Bailey Kruse’s pads. Eighth-grade forward Brooklyn Meyer netted the first goal of her varsity career by alertly tapping home the rebound for a 3-0 edge with 7:21 remaining in the first period.

Nordquist needed a mere 10 seconds to swipe the puck and feed Emler on the doorstep for a four-goal advantage. A minute later, Courtney Williams etched her name into the scoring column by pocketing a steal and knocking home her ensuing shot for a 5-0 lead with 6:10 left.

Emler duplicated Williams’ effort by garnering a steal of a Trojan clearing pass, rushed the right wing and slapped home a one-timer at the 1:07 juncture for a 6-0 first-frame lead.

Becker then accounted for both of the Cardinals’ goals during the second period. Becker cashed in a rebound off of Alyssa Fetters’ blocked shot at the 12:32 mark before Becker transformed a defensive gem into Fairmont Area’s eighth goal. Becker pocketed a steal along the left wing and wristed a liner past Kruse with 8:05 remaining in the middle segment.

With time winding down, Sandersfeld chipped the puck to Lytle, who smacked home the net-finding shot with 1:30 left in regulation to cap the Cardinals’ offensive outburst.

O’Connor turned away Worthington forward Kya Nickel’s hard blast from the left wing during the third period to maintain her shutout.

Kruse recorded a game-leading 38 saves between the pipes for the Trojans.

Fairmont Area 8, Worthington 2 — Forward Tom Havnen generated a game-best four points on the strength of two goals and two assists to engineer the Cardinals’ six-goal victory over the Trojans during Big South Conference ice action Thursday night in Worthington.

Trailing 1-0 in the opening period, Leyton Becker and Havnen combined for back-to-back goals to grab a lead that Fairmont Area would not relinquish on the night.

Becker converted Kaylan Legred’s assist into the equalizing goal for the Cardinals before Havnen tallied an unassisted goal to cap the opening-period offensive production.

Havnen then played a key role in Fairmont Area reeling off four consecutive second-period goals to widen the margin to 6-1 prior to the start of the third segment.

Havnen doled out an assist to Bryan Karp for the initial goal of the middle segment before Becker scored his second goal of the game single-handedly. Havnen duplicated Becker’s achievement with an unassisted lamp-lighter before teammate Karson Legred added a solo tally.
