Fairmont hoopsters nip KMS in Classic
WINDOM — The Fairmont Cardinals girls basketball lineup rallied behind a second-half comeback to tame the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints, 68-57, during opening-round action at the Windom Area Holiday Classic on Thursday night in Windom.
Fairmont (5-3) advances to play host Windom Area (3-5) for the four-team tournament championship at 4:30 p.m. today in Windom. The hometown Eagles edged the Alden-Conger Knights, 52-51, to reach the invitational’s finals.
Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (2-4) faces Alden-Conger (5-3) at 3 p.m. today for the tournament’s consolation crown.
Sophomore guard Lexi Lunn produced 14 points, grabbed six rebounds, distributed five assists and garnered four steals to help pace the Cardinals’ 39-23 second-half scoring advantage. The Fighting Saints held a 34-29 lead at intermission.
Sophomore guard Abby DeWitt scored a team-best 15 points for Fairmont, while doling out four assists and pocketing three steals.
Sophomore forward Taylor Crissinger neared double-double territory by scoring nine points and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds to complement three assists for the Cardinals.
Alli Lardy supplied eight points, seven rebounds and a team-best three blocked shots for Fairmont, while Brooke Hunwardsen netted eight points and distributed four assists.
Brenna Cutler and Claire Cutler added eight and four points, respectively, for the red-and-white.
The Cardinals connected on 21 of 40 shots from 2-point range for 53 percent, hit 4 of 18 from behind the 3-point arc and sank 14 of 23 at the free throw line.
Savannah Baker produced 15 points to guide Fairmont to a 50-22 first-round tournament triumph over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg during the B-squad tournament on Thursday in Windom.
Cambrie Anderson generated 10 points for the Cardinals, while teammate Abby Tonder chipped in seven points.
Windom Area 52, Alden-Conger 51 — Sophomore forward Maurissa Isaacs scored a team-best 18 points to engineer the Eagles’ one-point first-round holiday classic win over the Knights on Thursday night.
Sophomore guard Erika Bute poured in a game-leading 26 points to pace Alden-Conger’s performance.
Madison Maras netted seven points for the Eagles, who led 28-21 at halftime.
