Red Bulls sweep wrestling triangular

NEW ULM — The Class AA, No. 12-ranked Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls wrestling team opened the dual-meet season with a sweep over Waseca and New Ulm on Tuesday night in New Ulm.

The Red Bulls started with a 49-30 triumph over the Bluejays. Connor Simmonds got the Red Bulls started by pinning Jon Mortenson in 25 seconds at 106.

Red Bulls wrestlers Lucas Jagodzinske, No. 8-ranked Jordan Wolter and Parker Anderson all received forfeits at 113, 126 and 170, respectively.

Waseca’s 138-pounder Noah Schmidt and Jacob Hertzog, who competed at 220, also received forfeits.

Jaxson Rohman, who’s ranked fourth at 106 in Class AA, defeated 120-pounder Dayton Deutsch by a 19-3 technical fall to add to the Red Bulls’ lead. Payton Anderson, who wrestled at 132, took a 12-0 major decision over Ryan Berg, and Mario Maldonado pinned Blake Wendland in 49 seconds at 145.

Red Bulls’ 152 pounder Nathan Simmonds beat Dylan Spencer by an 18-5 major decision. No. 9-ranked, 160-pounder Collin Steuber used 1:44 to pin Adam Kankhe.

Waseca’s Lucas Maxon pinned 182-pounder Conner Tordsen in 3:55, and Bluejay teammate Avery Emmans pinned Dom Ortiz in 4:40.

Levi Kuschel used 19 seconds to pin Theo Krumholz at 285 for Waseca.

The Red Bulls then topped the New Ulm Eagles, 54-21, to completed the sweep.

Connor Simmonds had his second pin of the night, using 1:03 to complete the victory against Jackson Bode. Lucas Jagodzinske then pinned Carter Brandes in 24 seconds before Rohman pinned Rebekah Hoppe in 17 seconds.

Cole Ranweiler provided the Eagles with their first points, taking a 3-1 decision over Wolter. Ryan Wacker added a 2-1 decision against Payton Anderson at 132.

New Ulm 138-pounder Sean Howk received a forfeit before Eagles’ teammate Hunter Ranweiler beat Maldonado using a 6-1 decision.

Nathan Simmonds added more scoring for the Red Bulls, pinning Lane Miller in 2:58. Miles Fitzgerald took 32 seconds to pin Kelby Stocker at the 160-pound weight class.

Steuber moved up to 170 and pinned Riley Carson in 1:02 for six more Red Bulls points. Parker Anderson pinned Eagles 182-pound wrestler Feliz Medrano in 1:45, and Tordsen pinned Hunter Landsteiner in 2:42 at the 195 weight class.

Noah Linscheid pinned Ortiz in 5:48 at 220. Krumholz closed the Red Bulls out by pinning Colby Wenninger in 1:47.

Fairmont/Martin County West (2-0) wrestles St. Clair and Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther at 5 p.m. next Tuesday in Madelia.
