FHS runs to 1st, 3rd at own invite

FAIRMONT – The Class A, No. 2-ranked Fairmont Cardinals girls cross country team defended its title for the fourth consecutive year, while the Cardinal boys placed third at the Cardinal Invite on Monday at Cedar Park in Fairmont.

Class A, No. 8-ranked individual runner Jenna Pavich marked a runner-up time of 20 minutes, 37 seconds in the 5K race to help the Cardinals earn 18 points in the win. Albert Lea runner Autumn Muilenburg beat Pavich for the top individual spot (20:08).

“We have about 11 girls who are packed in there pretty close, so 11 of the 15 medals is quite an achievement for them,” Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said.

Iliana Ramon ran a 20:51 race for a third-place showing. Molly Hawkins, Sarah Krumholz, seventh-grader Laura Thompson and eighth-grader Tabitha Thatcher finished one after another to compile four additional top-10 finishes for the Cardinals.

Molly Hawkins completed a fifth-place time of 21:27, Krumholz was sixth (21:37), Thompson was next for a 22:03 race and Thatcher finished in 22:13 for the eighth spot.

Lizzy Subbert placed 10th, completing the 5K run in 22:19, with Emily Haugen timing a 22:29 for 11th place.

Megan Hawkins finished at 23:07 for the 12th spot, Anna Sundblad posted a time of 23:32 for 14th place and Elora Ramon rounded out the medal winners at 15th with a time of 24:00.

“It was a deceptively rough day to run because it was about 25 degrees above ideal,” Bonk said. “I thought we competed well. From about our fourth through about ninth runner, we really improved in the last mile and moved up around two or three places each.”

Fairmont’s Nathan Willett finished second with a time of 17:29, behind Albert Lea’s Carson Goodell (17:13), as the Cardinals boys team finished with a third-place score of 62. Mankato West won the invite with 35 points and Albert Lea, who had won the race for the last four years, was the runner-up with 40.

Andrew Moeller netted a fifth-place finish, running the 5K in 17:51 in the Cardinals’ own invite. Darrian Kueker also medaled for a 15th-place showing of 18:52.

“I know (Kueker) wanted a medal and he got it right at the end, so that was fun to see,” Bonk said.

Ben Huinker completed the run in 19:18 to finish 23rd for the Cardinals. Brandon Williams finished 26th and Dayton Pasch was right after him to record times of 19:42 and 19:50, respectively. Cody Lane rounded out the Cardinals’ top seven runners with a time of 20:09 for 30th place.

“I thought the guys’ times were solid with quite a few season’s bests,” Bonk said. “We were spread out, which I kind of expected. But it was a good, solid performance.”

Fairmont competes in the Milaca Mega Meet at noon Saturday at Milaca Golf Course in Milaca.
