Truman defeated at district; WBE ends year

SPRINGFIELD – Ethan Hurn shed his catcher’s gear to take the mound during Saturday’s Division II, 2nd District elimination American Legion baseball game in Springfield.

Hurn made the most of his first pitching opportunity of the summer, recording a game-high 11 strikeouts en route to firing a three-hit complete-game gem to power Truman past Heron Lake-Okabena, 10-0, in six innings at Riverside Park.

Hurn’s shutout – combined with Zach Wolter’s three-hit, two-RBI performance – propelled Truman into another elimination game on Sunday against Springfield.

But Decker Scheffler hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to lift Springfield over Truman, 4-2.

Truman finished the season with a 6-6 overall record.

Hurn and Zach Wolter scored a run each in the loss. Zach Wolter also doubled on 2-for-3 hitting and collected an RBI.

Josh Wolter went 1-for-3 with a double.

Zach Jahnz recorded an RBI on a triple, his only hit of the game.

Jahnz absorbed the loss, giving up four runs – one earned – on five hits while issuing eight strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work.

Tanner Vogel picked up the victory for Springfield. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out five for the complete-game win.

On Saturday, Hurn combined his signal-calling skills with a high-velocity fastball to scatter three hits – Trey Cranston’s second-inning single, David Volk’s fourth-frame single and Volk’s sixth-inning double – to keep HLO off the scoreboard.

Josh Wolter delivered Truman’s initial extra-base blast, launching a two-run triple to left field during the home half of the second inning.

Wolter’s extra-base hit plated Garrett Balcom, who had walked, and Quintin Greier, who reached on an error.

Greier later hammered a leadoff triple to trigger Post 115’s four-run fourth at-bat. Josh Wolter and Derek Shoen followed with walks, one run scored when Hurn’s grounder was mishandled and Zach Wolter lined a two-run single. Carter Wille added an RBI groundout to widen Truman’s lead to 6-0.

Mitchell Prafke, Balcom, Shoen, Hurn and Zach Wolter each produced singles during a two-run eighth at-bat, with Shoen and Hurn collecting one RBI each.

Tristan Maday and Jahnz later deposited back-to-back hits to open Truman’s sixth inning before courtesy runner Owen Wolter and Jahnz crossed the plate when Balcom’s single skidded under the Wabasso left fielder’s glove to end the game via the 10-run rule.

HLO starting pitcher Logan Knutson allowed two runs – neither earned – on two hits in two innings to take the loss. Knutson walked two and hit two batters.

Wabasso 3, Winnebago/ Blue Earth 2 – Nick Altermatt’s two-run single to cap a three-run top of the third inning proved the difference as Wabasso edged WBE by one run during Saturday’s elimination game in Springfield.

Ty Kemp’s leadoff single and Devon Liebl’s walk allowed C.J. Theis to bunt his Wabasso teammates into scoring position during the second. Tony Franta legged out a high infield chopper to plate Kemp for a 1-all tie.

Caleb Kemp later drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Nick Altermatt smacked a two-run single up the middle to plate Liebl and Franta for a 3-1 margin.

WBE produced a solo run during the bottom of the sixth inning to inch within one of the lead.

Alan Davids legged out an infield hit with one out before Kolt Gorg reached on a fielder’s choice. Gorg sprinted home when Zac Schonrock drilled an RBI double into the right-center gap. Wabasso starting pitcher Devon Liebl prevented further damage by notching one of his three strikeouts on the game.

Chris Sanders led off the bottom of the first with a single, advanced 90 feet on Kaylan Legred’s groundout and circled the bases when Davids’ sharp single to left was misplayed for an early 1-0 WBE lead.

Mathew Bell and Sanders each singled during WBE’s seventh at-bat, but Wabasso closer Nick Altermatt got a groundout from the only batter he faced to preserve Liebl’s pitching victory.

Liebl allowed two unearned runs on six hits and did not issue a walk in 6 2/3 innings to net the win.

Logan Jahnke gave up three earned runs on four hits, struck out seven and walked seven in seven innings of work to receive the loss for WBE.

Sanders and Davids each collected two of WBE’s seven hits on the game, while Gorg added a single.
