Mavericks spike out 3rd at West Invite
MANKATO – The Martin County West Maverick spikers captured third-place honors at the 12-team Mankato West volleyball invitational on the Minnesota State University campus on Saturday.
The hard-hitting Mavericks opened pool play by posting a 25-13, 25-15 victory over Cedar Mountain-Comfrey before downing Mayer Lutheran by a 25-22, 25-23 second-round decision.
Class A, No. 11-ranked Windom Area edged Martin County West in third-round action, 25-18, 25-23, before the Mavericks bounced back to defeat New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva in the tournament’s third-place match, 25-19, 25-12.
Middle hitter Reilly Geistfeld pounded out a team-leading 28 kills to complement five aces behind 38-for-42 serving and two ace blocks to help fuel the Mavericks’ stellar performance.
Outside spiker Jordan Gregory hammered 24 kills, recorded seven solo blocks and connected on 24 of 26 serves to pack scoring punch for Martin County West, while setter Ellie Kuehl distributed 77 assists to go with five aces on the strength of a 41-for-42 serving effort.
Maia Taylor delivered 15 kills, five solo blocks and one service ace for the Mavericks, while Kenzie Marlin tallied eight kills to complement two aces behind 17-for-19 serving.
Emma Behrends contributed nine kills and one solo block for Martin County West, Madison Klima notched a team-best six aces on the strength of 31-for-33 serving, Jayden Fritz went 4-for-6 at the line, while Jessica Klima was 3 of 4 serving.
Martin County West (7-1, 3-0 Valley) travels to Alden-Conger on Tuesday night.
