Simser leads class into FHS’ Hall

A decade of athletic excellence. Jim Simser accepted the unenviable challenge of replacing a legendary prep football coach and athletic director at Fairmont High School in the fall of 1990.

Simser, however, exceeded even his close friend and retired Cardinals head coach Tom Mahoney’s expectations during his 10-year tenure along the Fairmont sideline.

The former New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva High School coaching guru, who had guided the Panthers to four state appearances including the Class C state crown in 1976 and the Class B state championship in 1978, engineered three state football bids from 1990-99 – including Fairmont’s first-ever appearance in the Metrodome by reaching the 1992 Class A state semifinals.

Simser then earned his rightful place in the Minnesota Football Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame in 2000 after retiring from the coaching ranks with a 223-91-1 overall record – which currently ranks 31st all-time in the state.

During this fall’s Homecoming weekend gala on Oct. 2-3, Simser will join six former Cardinal athletic greats – all 1990s graduates – along with legendary Fairmont sports radio personality Rod Halvorsen in the Fairmont Athletic Hall of Fame.

Kyle Seifert (1993), one of Simser’s top student-athletes, will take his rightful spot in the Hall along with fellow sports standouts Eric Anderson (1997), Jill Newlin Peterson (1996), Jenna Tietje Gilday (1994), Heather Wollschlager (1992) and Alysia Zielske Danielson (1992).

All eight inductees will be recognized during halftime of the Cardinals’ 7 p.m. Homecoming football game against Albert Lea on Friday, Oct. 2, at Mahoney Field.

The Hall of Fame activities start on Saturday, Oct. 3, with a social hour from 4:15-5 p.m. in the high school commons, followed by a 5 p.m. meal. The 22nd induction ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. in the high school’s Performing Arts Center.

Tickets cost $10 per person, and can be purchased at HyVee in Fairmont, at the Fairmont High School activities office, from any Hall of Fame committee member or at the door on Oct. 3.

Seifert, who’s an associate professor of biology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., will make the long trip to his hometown to reminisce with Simser after playing offensive and defensive tackle for the legendary coach from 1990-92.

The three-year football letterwinner played a key role in guiding Fairmont to the 1991 South Central Conference championship before using his blocking skills to literally open the path for the Cardinals to reach the 1992 Class A state semifinals.

Seifert earned all-SCC and Sentinel All-Area honors for a second straight season in 1992 and was chosen for a spot on the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s all-state team en route to being selected to play in the Minnesota Football Coaches Association’s annual all-star game.

The three-year all-SCC and two-time All-Area first baseman/outfielder also made a big impact on the diamond, using his lethal bat and sure glove to power the Cardinals to runner-up state accolades in the 1993 Class A baseball tournament. Seifert was selected to the all-state tournament team for his 7-for-11 hitting performance, including one home run, and nine RBIs during the three-game span.

Seifert also lettered twice in basketball, helping power Fairmont to a sub-section championship during his senior hardwood campaign.

The triple-threat athletic standout received academic offers and a football scholarship to Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. The three-year starter at offensive tackle for the Augie gridders earned academic all-North Central Conference honors in 1997, and later a bachelor of arts degree in biology that spring.

Seifert went on to earn his doctorate degree in biomedical sciences, with an emphasis in microbiology and immumology, from the University of Florida in 2004.

Seifert will get the chance to reunite with fellow three-sport standout Heather Wollschlager, who graduated one year ahead of him, in remembering Alysia Zielske Danielson – Wollschlager’s basketball teammate. Zielske Danielson died at the age of 35 on Dec. 20, 2009, after a battle with squamous cell carcinoma.

Zielske and Wollschlager combined court skills to guide Fairmont to an appearance in the District 5 championship game in 1992.

Zielske, a solid contributor to the cross country team in the fall, made herself a household name in southern Minnesota in track & field ranks.

The 2011 Sentinel Relays honorary referee closed out her stellar five-year prep track & field career in 1992 as the Cardinals’ No. 4 all-time leading scorer with 1,386 points. Zielske also finished with the program’s third-best time in the high hurdles (15.7 seconds), fourth-best time in the 300-meter hurdles (47.0) and sixth-best distance in the long jump (16 feet, 8 inches).

Zielske, who traded handoffs with Becky Lund, Sara Bachmann and Andrea DeVries to win the 1989 Class AA 4×800-meter relay state crown, earned a track & field scholarship to the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

Zielske merited all-American status five times as a member of the UST women’s track & field team, while also earning magna cum laude academic honors in graduating with a degree in finance. UST honored Zielske Danielson posthumously by naming the women’s track & field team’s MVP after her.

Zielske Danielson worked as a manager for Travelers Insurance Company’s IT global sourcing in St. Paul.

Wollschlager, like Zielske Danielson, excelled in three prep sports before earning both athletic and academic scholarships at the collegiate level.

The 12-time Fairmont letterwinner netted all-conference volleyball accolades during her second year as a starter in 1991 before capping her four-year varsity basketball career with all-SCC honors during both her junior and senior seasons to complement an appearance in the 1992 district championship game.

The five-year varsity golfer played a key role in powering the Cardinals to four consecutive conference championships from 1989-92 and three straight trips to the Class AA state tournament (1990-92).

Wollschlager earned sectional individual medalist honors in 1991 and 1992, netted academic all-state honors in golf in 1990 and 1992, while capturing weekly all-state individual honors on three occasions during her senior season in the fairways.

Wollschlager played golf at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter for three years, becoming the first Gusties female golfer to earn all-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors for three consecutive seasons – 1993-95.

Wollschlager has utilized her bachelor degrees in business and psychology to establish herself as the director of America’s Executive Recruiting Services with Ernst & Young in Minneapolis for the last 14 years.

Similar to Wollschlager, Jenna Tietje Gilday excelled in volleyball and basketball en route to an outstanding three-sport prep career, but opted for track & field in the spring.

The choice proved an intelligent one for the 1994 Region 2AA Triple A award winner and state finalist as the four-year track & field letterwinner earned all-conference honors for three years in a row – 1992-94.

The 1992 all-state track & field performer played an integral role in helping steer the Cardinals to the 1991 True Team state championship, in addition to third-place showings in 1992 and 1994, and a fifth-place finish in 1993.

Ironically, Tietje and Zielske ran legs on Fairmont’s third-place 4×800-meter relay team at the 1992 state meet before Tietje traded handoffs in the same event to qualify for state during both her junior and senior seasons.

Tietje, however, excelled on both the volleyball and basketball courts for four and three years, respectively. The two-time Fairmont volleyball MVP earned both all-conference and All-Area honors three times.

The two-time Cardinals’ basketball MVP also netted all-SCC and All-Area accolades two years apiece. Tietje finished her career as Fairmont’s 20th all-time scorer and 17th-best rebounder.

Tietje earned athletic and academic scholarships to Augustana College, competing in track & field for one and a half seasons. She was a conference finalist in the javelin as a freshman, but turned her focus totally on academics.

Tietje earned a bachelor of arts in business/communications from Augustana in 1998, before meriting an MBA in marketing and international business from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota in 2008, graduating in the top 10 percent of her class.

Tietje Gilday works as the group marketing manager for the baby and kids division at Target in Minneapolis.

Jill Newlin Peterson rounds out the four outstanding female student-athletes to be inducted into Fairmont High School’s esteemed Hall of Fame on the heels of her outstanding three-sport prep career.

The 11-time letterwinner powered the Cardinal gymnasts to the state tournament three times during her five-year varsity tenure, helping the team place third in 1992 and a pair of sixth-place showings in 1994 and 1996.

Newlin also qualified for the individual state gymnastics meet during her freshman through senior years. She netted state bids on the uneven bars, vault and all-around in 1993; all-around, beam and unevens in 1994; vault in 1995; and all-around, unevens and floor in 1996.

Newlin, who competed in tennis during her final two prep years, played a key role in powering Fairmont to the state track & field meet four times as a team, in addition to earning state medals four straight seasons as an individual qualifier.

The four-year track & field letterwinner helped propel the Cardinals to back-to-back runner-up honors at the True Team State Meet in 1995 and 1996, in addition to third place in 1994 and fifth in 1993.

The perennial state-qualifying long jumper, triple jumper and hurdler went on to capture four letters in track & field at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. She competed in the long jump, triple jump, pole vault and heptathlon during her collegiate days.

Newlin Peterson earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management in 2001, and now serves as the marketing director for GMR Marketing/Pierce Promotions in New Berlin, Wis.

While Newlin closed out her prep track & field career as one of the top point producers of all-time, Eric Anderson did likewise in the spring sport at Fairmont on the boys’ side.

Anderson captured both the conference 1,600- and 3,200-meter championships during his outstanding track & field career, in addition to qualifying for the Class AA state meet three times in 2-mile run.

The No. 2 all-time record holder at Fairmont in the 3,200 with a time of 9:40.6 proved a key member of the Cardinals’ 1995 track & field squad that won the Section 2AA True Team Meet en route to a fifth-place showing at state.

Anderson still holds the No. 4 all-time mark in the 1,600 (4:29.9) and is in the program’s top 20 all-time in 800-meter relay splits with a time of 2:02.9.

Anderson also excelled in cross country in the fall, helping pace two Fairmont teams to top 10 finishes in the Class AA state meet, in addition to three conference team championships.

The three-year all-state runner placed fifth at the Class AA state cross country meet in 1996, and is one of only three 1,000-point scorers in the 50-year history of Fairmont cross country with 1,083.

The four-year all-conference and three-year academic all-state runner also is one of just three runners in school history to run under 16 minutes for a 5K race with a 15:59.

Anderson, who earned a degree in theological studies from Bethel University in St. Paul, serves as the senior pastor at Lifespring Evangelical Church in Crosby, Minn.

Rod Halvorsen completes the Class of 2015 after having covered all of the above athletes during the prime of their respective high school careers.

The KSUM/KFMC news director earned a broadcasting degree from Brown Institute in Minneapolis in 1972 before starting his legendary career at the Fairmont-based radio station in 1977.

The 1970 Kiester High School graduate became the radio station’s sports director in 1986, and has enjoyed numerous memorable Cardinal sports moments on the air.

Halvorsen said his biggest thrill was covering the 1990 Fairmont boys basketball team’s third-place state finish, with the Cardinals’ state runner-up showing in the 1993 baseball tournament running a close second.

The voice of the Cardinals added current Fairmont head football coach Mat Mahoney’s state runner-up performance in 2011, Patti Strukel and the Cardinal girls basketball program’s first-ever trip to the state tournament in 2007, and Simser and the Fairmont football team’s state appearance in the Metrodome in 1992 as career highlights.
