MCW girls repeat as ‘A’ champs
FAIRMONT – Martin County West senior standout Taryn Tumbleson proved perfect in her three track events during her final Sentinel Relays track & field meet on Friday night in Fairmont.
Tumbleson dominated the field in both hurdle events before sprinting past all of her opponents in the 200-meter dash to power the Mavericks to a second consecutive Class AA girls team championship during the 60th running of the 32-team elite meet at Bob Bonk Track.
The Mavericks generated 162 points to outdistance runner-up Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet (134) and third-place Mountain Lake Area (126). Fairmont’s junior varsity edged North Union, 82-72, for fourth place in the eight-team bracket.
Ironically, Tumbleson perfected a slight flaw in her hurdling technique after reading the Sentinel’s sports section earlier this spring.
“I worked on my trail leg (in the hurdles) after seeing a picture of myself in the paper,” said the Class A’s only girls’ triple-winner, who also cleared 4-6 to pocket third in the high jump.
Tumbleson posted a gold-medal time of 16.46 seconds to outduel Fairmont junior varsity hurdler Lizzy Subbert (17.99). Tumbleson then swept the hurdles by crossing the finish line in the 300-meter version ahead of Subbert again, 48.25-50.65.
Tumbleson then closed out her final appearance at the Sentinel Relays by coasting to a victory in the open 200 in 27.46.
Tumbleson, however, was not alone in the winner’s circle as Maverick teammates Haley Jensen, Sara Carlson, Cora Olson and the 4×800 relay team of Carlson, Brooke Anderson, Whitney Smith and Morgan Larson all struck gold.
Jensen, who underwent hip surgery for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, made her track & field debut of the spring by outsprinting Mountain Lake Area’s Lydia Hildebrandt to the wire in the 100-meter dash, 13.74-13.82.
“This is the first time in a year that I’ve sprinted,” said Jensen. “I could feel the fatigue around 70 (meters), but it felt good to be back on the track.”
Carlson outdueled Maverick teammate Whitney Smith to capture top honors in the 3,200 – 12:15.9-12:47.47, while Olson sprayed the sand in the long jump pit to a winning mark of 14-5 to pack potent point production for MCW.
Carlson then led off the winning 4×800 relay team’s performance of 10:25.34 before handing the baton to Brooke Anderson. Whitney Smith and Morgan Larson accelerated by their rivals to cap the convincing gold-medal effort.
Larson contributed a silver-medal time of 1:03.52 in the open 400, Anderson covered the mile run in a second-time time of 6:05.78, while Nicole Sherer heaved the shot to a runner-up mark of 32-0 1/2.
Alexis Valvick, Makayla Hardman, Kyarsten Mullen and Olivia Marlow traded handoffs to produce a winning time of 1:55.81 in the 4×200 relay for North Union.
Valvick, Mullen, Hardman and Marlow slightly changed up the order in the 4×100 to produce another gold medal in a time of 54.04.
Hardman also captured third place in the open 100 behind Jensen and Hildebrandt in 13.9.
LCWM/Nicollet thrower Alayna Theissen doubled her gold medals on the Relays by sweeping the shot (37-10 1/4) and discus (127-10).
Martin County West competes in the True Team Section Meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Mapleton.
North Union travels to Britt, Iowa, on Monday to face West Hancock.
