Council moves forward financing plan

This week the Fairmont City Council moved forward the proposed financing plan for the proposed community center. While a lot of additional steps need to be taken and contracts need to be worked out, this was a good step toward moving this project forward. As the community center advisory board also said this week, joint work sessions will continue to be key for making sure all parties are on the same page and can continue to work together on keeping this project afloat.

150 years later, city band plays on

The Fairmont City Band kicked off its season this week with a performance at the Sylvania Park Bandshell. This year is extra special as the city band celebrates 150 years. It originally began in 1873 and has been consistently playing at the bandshell since 1926. What an awesome community event for both the players and the audience. The band will play at 8 p.m. the next four Tuesdays. We encourage community members to go and play or go and enjoy the music in the park.

District unveils new before and after school program

During the Fairmont School Board meeting a new before and after school program, Cardinal Prime, was talked about. The program will provide care for school aged children beginning at 7 a.m. and go as late as 5:30 p.m. While this program will help out parents, it could hurt our local daycare providers as they could lose some of the age group that helps fill their quota.

Interns gain experience from local law enforcement

The Fairmont Police Department has two interns in its program this year. We’re happy to see this program continue, especially because it’s proven to be so successful as interns have returned to take full-time employment with both the Fairmont Police Department and the Martin County Sheriffs Office. It’s the perfect program that benefits both students and our local agencies.
