Shepherd’s In preps for fundraiser

Shepherd’s In will have its first Tour of Tables fundraiser on March 4. The Fairmont-based organization is raising funds to rent or purchase a home for people in need of a place to sleep. The founder of Shepherd’s In, Curtis Moeckle, said since 2019 they’ve helped 70 people in Martin County get off of the streets. Thank you, Curtis, for starting Shepherd’s In and for working toward providing this need.

County denies request for mine

Earlier this week, the Martin County Board of Commissioners denied a conditional use permit for Lorentz & Sons Construction, which wanted to mine gravel and sand within section 25 of Fairmont Township. The request was first received in the fall of 2021 and previosuly recommended for approal by the Martin County Plannig Commission. However, several public hearings were held where nearby residents spoke out against the project. It’s easy to see both sides of the issue, but ultimately it seems like this is a case of ‘it’s a good idea, build it, but not in my backyard.’

Doulas sought to support local families

Fairmont Women of Today is looking for people interested in becoming certified to be a birth doula. These doulas would support families in Martin and Faribault counties. This sounds like a great program which could no doubt benefit many. Please consider applying if it interests you.

County funds rural broadband

Martin County is putting $1.5 million toward rural broadband assistance. The program will cover up to half the cost of expanding fiber internet to people’s homes in rural areas. It’s about time this gets done. In today’s age, we all need access to internet to work, do schoolwork and even pay bills. Thanks to the county for supporting this important project.
