CREST celebrates 25 years with open house

Volunteer organization CREST recently celebrated 25 years. At that time, four long-time volunteers were recognized and we’d also like to extend our thanks to them. CREST does crucial work and offers immense support to people in our community but like so many other organizations it is in need of volunteers. Please consider getting involved if you can.

Council talks boathouse zoning

This week the Fairmont City Council voted to direct city staff to amend the ordinance that requires a boathouse to have a 50-ft. setback from the ordinary high water level. Instead, they’re going to make it a 10-ft. setback, which is what the Minnesota DNR calls for. This was a good move by the council which those who live on a lake and want to build a structure will no doubt appreciate.

Updating council policy

Unfortunately, the Fairmont City Council had to update its policy this week so that residents will no longer be required to share their address when speaking during the public comment portion of council meetings. This came after several residents were harassed over social media. It’s sad that residents were targeted after sharing concerns with the council.

Candidates meet in forum

Thank you to the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce, American Association of University Women and Pierce Accounting for putting on two candidate forums this week. This gave the people of both Fairmont and Martin County the opportunity to learn about candidates running for open positions. We hope people took the opportunity to get informed and will show up on Nov. 8 to vote. Information on when the forums will be rebroadcast can be found on the chamber’s website at fairmontchamber.org.
