Speech students ready for Nationals

Three Fairmont High School speech students, Vanessa Schultze, Kara Fischer and Kaycie Brookens, will be competing at Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky this weekend and next week. Congratulations to these students for this achievement. We wish them and all other teams competing at state competitions in the coming days good luck!

IHD festival returns this weekend

Interlaken Heritage Days takes place today in Fairmont. Be sure to check out the variety of events happening at Gomsrud Park and don’t miss the parade, which starts at 6 p.m. Thank you to the organizers of the festival for making it something the whole community can enjoy year after year.

Re-zoning request draws crowd

This week the Fairmont Planning Commission considered a request to re-zone 93 acres north of George Lake and west of Holland Street. The request was to re-zone from residential to business in plans of putting a campground on the site. Many residents spoke out against the request and ultimately the commission denied it– which was a good choice. It would be great to see another campground in the area and hopefully the group can find a safer access point to it.

Interns benefit from program

The 14 interns in the Minnesota Valley Action Council/Martin County youth internship program met with the Martin County Commissioners this week. It’s great to hear how well-matched the students are in their internships. This is a valuable program that helps provide the students work experience while also giving businesses additional help for the summer months. Win-win.
