Call it what you like, it’s an invasion

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops on Monday into sections of Ukraine held by Russian-backed separatists. Putin had earlier recognized the validity of the separatists’ claims of independence, and said the Russian troops were entering the regions as “peacekeepers.”

Peacekeepers? Right.

President Joe Biden has pegged the move for what it is, the beginning of an invasion of Ukraine, and he announced heavy economic sanctions against Russian oligarchs and banks, with harsher sanctions to come if Putin advances further into Ukraine.

Germany took steps to halt the certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia. The pipeline would allow Russian to pipe more gas to Europe, and losing that revenue would be a big hit. The European Union is placing sanctions on the 351 members of the Russian Duma, the legislative body that voted to recognize the Ukraine separatists and authorized Putin’s use of troops on foreign soil.

Russian troops are on Ukrainian soil. Call it what you want, that is an invasion. The world needs to be concerned, and to take action.
