Goodell’s talk is just that until action taken
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sternly and forcefully said Wednesday that the NFL will not tolerate racism, discrimination in hiring, and will take strong action if investigation finds wrongdoing that threatens the integrity of the game.
That’s big talk that Goodell has spoken before. The NFL has come under fire recently, with a lawsuit by fired Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores, who is Black. Flores claims he has experienced racism and discrimination in the league, and was offered $100,000 by his owner for every team loss in a season where the owners wanted to better their draft position.
The NFL has had the Rooney Rule for years, which requires teams to interview two minority candidates for coaching and front office positions. It has led to a lot of minority coaches getting a free dinner and a cursory interview before being shown the door. The NFL has just five minority head coaches on 32 teams.
Goodell has talked a good talk before, but taking action often only comes only when evidence cannot be ignored, like the running back who was suspended for domestic violence only when a security camera video showed him knocking out his girlfriend on an elevator.
We will believe the sincerity of the NFL in making changes when real action is taken.
