Program provides local work experience

The Minnesota Valley Action Council/Martin County Summer Internship program is looking for area college students interested in earning some work experience back home. The program will match young adults with a business they’re interested in. This is a win-win for both parties as the students get experience and local businesses get help for the summer which could result in a full-time employee down the road. If you know of an area student who would be interested, have them contact Tammie Hested at MVAC.

City council works on communication

This week the Fairmont City Council had a work session with the League of Minnesota Cities to work on efficient and effective communication, among some other matters. We’re glad the council is addressing a glaring weakness. Hopefully the work sessions help the council work better together.

School board hears district updates

The Fairmont School Board heard from Dr. Sarah Mittelstadt regading the IDEA Full Funding Act. It’s frustrating that though it’s a federal mandate, the federal government has failed to fund 40 percent of special education as it promised to. We’re glad the board approved to fully fund the federal share.

Ice fishing contest makes return

Today the Fairmont Lakes Foundation ice fishing tournament takes place across Fairmont’s five lakes. We’re glad this popular event is back after missing last year due to Covid. The tournament provides a fun day out on the lakes and 100 percent of the money raised stays here and will go toward upkeep of the boat ramps, clean-up efforts and other projects. Hopefully the event has a good turnout.
