Whittling away at the plan

President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan is being whittled away. Biden announced a breakthrough agreement on Thursday before heading off to summits in Europe, but there are still a lot of details to be worked out and deals to be made before a vote is taken.

The former $3.5 trillion plan is now down to $1.75 trillion — turning it into perhaps a Build Back Better than Nothing bill.

Progressive members of the House are upset at the loss of some of their top priorities — paid family leave and efforts to lower prescription drug prices, for example, are gone from the bill. But there is still $555 billion to tackle climate change, free pre-kindergarten for all youngsters, expanded health care, and a one year extension of a child care tax credit.

But with a bill that size, do we really know what’s in it? Do our representatives in Congress? A recent AP-NORC poll indicates that fewer than half of the people responding said they knew something about the poll.

Poll respondents were largely critical of the way the president has been handling negotiations. People expect him to be able to bring his party in line, which is a challenge not many presidents have been able to pull off over the years.

We know President Biden wants to get this done fast, but if it’s going to be done, it should be done right with a clear understanding of what is in the bill. Let’s not have another “We won’t know what’s in the bill until we pass it” piece of legislation.
