Epicureans
On September 5, 2021, a bit of Fairmont’s history will be honored in Iowa. The Epicureans, Fairmont’s own Rock and Roll band from the ’60s, will be inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Music Association. We congratulate the surviving band members on this achievement, and we are also sorry that they won’t be able to celebrate with co-founder Steve Murphy.
Still, the reunion and induction are sure to be a hit. We’re thankful to Tom Tourville and Jerry Clark for sharing the history of the band.
5Lakes Nutrition
Congratulations to Brittany Fowler on the opening of her new business, 5Lakes Nutrition. Fowler also owns Vital Cryotherapy and Wellness in Fairmont. It’s always good to see an entrepreneurial endeavor take root, and we’re glad to see it happening in Fairmont.
Fairmont Schools
In a special meeting this last week the Fairmont School Board unanimously approved a resolution, directed by superintendent Andy Traetow, that regardless of vaccination status, staff, students and visitors will not be required to wear face coverings.
We’re glad that individuals will be able to choose to do so, and we’re also glad that the schools will remain fluid on the issue as developments occur. It’s also good to hear that distance learning will not be an option. Kids will likely be more focused and able to learn better in person.
FHS Associate of Arts
Students at Fairmont Area Schools, in partnership with Minnesota West Community and Technical College, will be able to earn an Associate of Arts degree in conjunction with their high school diploma. Fairmont Area School’s principal of curriculum, instruction and research, Kim Niss, said that they began working on greatly expanding their college in the school (CIS) classes about five years ago.
It’s good to see these goals coming to fruition. What a benefit for FHS students, and what a benefit for our community to be able to offer such well-rounded educational opportunities. Thank you to all involved for making this a reality.
