Kamp For Kids

Overwhelming is the word to describe the results of the Kamp for Kids red bag collection last Saturday. Over 5,000 pounds of food, toys, and healthcare items were collected in Fairmont and other Martin County communities and delivered to the Fairmont Salvation Army Center to be distributed to Martin County residents. Thank you citizens of Martin County for meeting a need that has only grown due to the COVID pandemic.

Thank you to the numerous volunteers and area Boy Scouts who helped collect the red bags, unload cars, and stock shelves that helped make the day a huge success.

Fairmont budget

At a work session last Monday, the Fairmont city council addressed the 2021 budget. One point of discussion was what to do with the estimated excess of $265,000 from the half-cent sales tax from the voter-approved tax earmarked for recreational amenities, to the construction of a community center.

The council discussed using the $265,000 or liquor store profits on street improvements. $265,000 will not go very far on improving streets, so spend this money on the voted on purpose of improving recreational amenities. The city is researching new ways to tax/fund/assess street improvements so also leave the liquor store profits for one-time capital improvements.

Parents sue Walz

On Thursday a group of parents sued Gov. Walz and other state officials, seeking to throw out his order that put high school sports on hold to try to slow the spread of the coronavirus. You may agree or disagree with this suit, but what does this suit teach our young people? Too often in our society, lawsuits are the answer to disagreements, misunderstandings, and perceived wrongs. This is another case.
